The heat is on MMA ref Steve Mazzagatti (pictured w/stache) in this week leading up to UFC 87. The formerly mustacheiod Mazzagatti's competence has been called into question more than few times by media, fans and most importantly Brock Lesnar.

Lesnar spoke with ProMMARadio's Larry Pepe and basically called Mazzagatti a clown for his actions early on in the loss to Frank Mir. Lesnar grazed the back of Mir's head with just one punch. Instead of issuing a verbal warning, Mazzagatti stopped the fight with only 25 seconds elapsed and deducted a point from Lesnar.

"It's just an consistency in the reffing by that particular referee. Every fight that I ever watch him ref there's a lot of inconsistency. I'm not naming any names."

CLICK BELOW TO HEAR PART OF THE LESNAR INTERVIEW (w/Pepe on ProMMARadio):

Listen to the entire Lesnar conversation here. Brock questions the legitimacy of Kimbo Slice, talks about his training and say that his opponent at UFC 87 Heath Herring is a poor wrestler. There's also much discussion of Jake O'Brien's wrestling domination of Herring.

It's not easy being an MMA official. You've got to protect the fighters' safety but also let fights reach their legitimate conclusion. The real problem with Mazzagatti's Lesnar point deduction was the fact that he strayed from his normal reffing philosophy. He's generally known as a guy who lets action go. New Jersey-based Dan Mirgaliotta has his critics, but more often that not when something goofy happens, Mazzagatti is at the center of the storm. A quick search of the internet indicates that Mazzagatti may be the most highly criticized official in MMA.

1. Jamie Varner v. Rob McCullough @ WEC 32

Varner loses his mouthpiece and actually stops fighting then signals his own timeout. Varner, who looked wobbly, is actually granted a stoppage by Mazzagatti.

2. Kevin Burns v. Anthony Johnson @ UFN 14

Burns clearly poked Johnson in the right eye. Johnson went down in a heap. Mazzagatti stopped the fight awarding a TKO victory to Burns.

3. Gray Maynard v. Rob Emerson @ TUF 5 Finale

Maynard slammed Emerson but in the process knocked himself out. The win is initially given to Maynard before ringside officials cleared things up for Mazzagatti and the fight was ruled a no-contest.

4. Jamie Varner v. Marcus Hicks @ WEC 35

This is the type of fight where Mazzagatti scares some people. Hicks was knocked down and out with 3:12 left in the first round. He then took 19 additional punches and three knees to the face before the fight is stopped 20 seconds later.

5. Mike Whitehead v. Vernon White at IFL - Las Vegas

Whitehead had White's back and rained down punches. He then told Mazzagatti that White had tapped. Mazzagatti clearly didn't see it but honored Whitehead's 'official' call and stopped it. Coach Ken Shamrock is seen on the ring apron screaming at Mazzagatti, "that was a horrible f**kin call!"

6. Shayna Baszler v. Cristiane Santos @ Elite XC

Santos knocked down Baszler with 1:31 left in the first then prematurely celebrated her victory by jumping on the top of the cage. Santos carried on for 13 seconds while Mazzagatti stood in the middle of the ring and screamed "hey" in Santos' direction to keep fighting. The Portuguese-speaking Santos had no idea what Mazzagatti was saying. Instead of a disqualification, Santos was allowed to come back down from the cage and the action was restarted around 1:08. Santos went on to finish Baszler.

7. Babalu v. David Heath @ UFC 74

The pre-fight included a war of words between the fighters. Babalu got in position for an anaconda choke finish. Mazzagatti stopped he fight and Heath held onto the choke for an extra three seconds. Some think Mazzagatti didn't do all he could to force Babalu to stop.

8. Thiago Alves v. Karo Parisyan @ UFN 13

Alves stopped Parisyan with one big knee and then two punches on his arm. Parisyan was beside himself and actually pushed UFC fight booker Joe Silva several times in the cage as he protested the Mazzagatti stoppage.

Mazzagatti seems like a nice guy and showed a good sense of humor during this 2007 interview with MMAMania.com. Although this guy is a little crazy with his top 45 reasons he hates Mazzagatti. The ref does need to tighten things up or he's going to become an unfair target for many fight fans.

Also - I typed that comment in mixed case - what's with the no-caps display? Let's hope I'm just seeing it in the pre-moderated state... And I don't think of the first of the 7 dirty words as particularly profane.

Does it really matter?? One is a so so heavyweight. The other is a wrestler that if he starts pulling off wins in the UFC makes MMA look like a cluster FU$@ fight club.. Could Lesnar train three years and start boxing top tier fighters?? I think he would be in the amateurs still learning his craft.. The fact he gets 250K a fight, and Page got 225K to defend his title is a joke.. And people talk ish about boxing??? What a joke..

Regardless of the Mir fight, Mazzigatti is horrible. He is a magnet for questionable stoppages. No matter the sport, selling the call is a major part of officiating. You have to be loud, proud, and confidant when you make a call or give a warning. Steve Maz...a.k.a Mumbles would have less problems, like he did with Lesnar if he sounded off like he had a pair. Even if he did this, it still wouldn't make get him out of the controversy as he tends to stop fights short. Not to put all the crap on Mumbles....Herb " I let the crowd dictate the match" Dean is also bad. How many times will he stand a match up as the crowd starts to get on the fighters for slow action....no matter what is taking place on the ground. There needs to be some legit officials to come up in the sport.

Yeah he stopped the fight because and rested Mir because he didn't want this " Fake Wrestler" coming to MMA and dominating a former Champion which he did win or lose. This is the same reason why people above or saying if he wins its just another fight club. NEWS IT IS. Its for tough guys who train in all displines which get watered down. Period. Its a street fight. People can throw around all the Technical names about holds they want. Most of these guys come off the streets and be successful. Look at Rich Franklin. He was a teacher and was a champion. That ref sucks and continues to be in the mist of odd stoppages. Brock Dominated Mir. Simple and plain. HE lost but Mir should have lost he wasn't even fighting back.....

Derrick M Im really starting to think you know nothing about sports. Man let me set all your stories correct. First he was beating Mir to the point after the fight MIr stated himself he was just holding on and hoping the ref didn't stop it. Secondly, My cousin who plays for the vikings said Brock was an athletic beast he just never played football before so he didn't know techniques. Also they didn't cut him they wanted to send him to NFL europe to help him learn his techniques, gaps and defensive skims. Secondly this man was the best heavy weight ameatur wrestler in the world. Did you not see how he monevered around Mir on the ground. Don't hate on a man because he does everything you want to do for a living while you just can blog about it. Man these people kill me hating on these blogs. They talk about people like their just average Joes if that was the case why aren't you guys doing it. Instead of typing about it?

theres really no reason for anyone to just hate on lesnar for no reason. he was a big time college wrestler with plenty of accomplishments. he earned his spot in the ufc, he just has to keep it. look at all the guys that just fall into mma with wrestling backgrounds. pretty sure his is as good or better than most. he's a wrecking ball on a mission, so get used to it.

Obviously Lesnar has some ability in wrestling and his size cant be ignored.. What troubled me was how easily he got submitted. Also, he seems to be a plodder when it comes to striking/boxing. If someone can stand him up, and make him throw, I think he will have trouble there as well.. I am rooting for him. I want him to clean up the HW UFC division and expose MMA for what it really is. A cluster fu#$ of many disciplines all watered down into one... MMA... If he can come in and dominate, he will prove my point...

Jose is right... Lesnar is probobly an amateur novice class boxer at best. Which will make it all the more funny when he starts reeling off wins the the great UFC... It will expose the sport as well as the over hyped UFC... it is the practitioner of many, master of none...

stop hyping up boxing. the mere fact that mma fighters don't only use boxing in an mma fight shows the weaknesses of boxing. plus there are a bunch of mma fighters who had amateur or pro backgrounds in boxing that did horribly in mma, just like there are mma fighters who do horribly in boxing. they're two different sports so stop trying to compare em so much. it's like comparing cricket and baseball, they have some similarities but are still different

Lesnar played football in highschool, so I'm sure he had some tecunique, otherwise the Vikings wouldn't even have given him a try-out; he just didn't have NFL-level technique, and was rusty from not playing football for about 7 years.
But, let's give the man some well earned respect! Here's a guy that gave up making millions a year because he wanted to compete for real again. Walking away from a "cushy" (compared to the NFL or MMA), extremely high-paying job to put his health on the line because he likes to beat people up. I personally think that's very admirable and, even though I think Herring will win, I'm definately rooting for Brock.

i'm not sure how lesnar winning a match, if he ever does, lessens the sport of mma. it is a sport where you can be the jack of many trades and the uber-master of none and still win. so what. it just means that people who are the master of one discipline can get caught by some one who is a journeyman in another discipline, if he allows the fight to go, or can't stop it from going, into the other guy's comfort zone. that's the sport.

If an mma fighter can overwhelm his opponent with sheer strength and wrestling ability so be it. there have been world champion boxers with no knock out power, others with no defensive prowess, others with no decent jab. there are nfl quaterbacks are pure pocket passers, and others who work the field better on the run. it doesn't lessen the sport. you win with whatever you can bring to the table that overwhelms your opponent. lesnar is an updated version of marc coleman. there's nothing wrong with hat. he will lose some and (still maybe) win some. the sport, and the rest of the athletes, will be fine.

Some of the best athletes are great because of their raw tallent. Even if they never learn to hone their skills, they are always a threat due to raw, natural tallent.
Brock does need to suck it up. I do think the ref made a bad call as Steve M should have stood the fighters up, seperated them, given Muir a few to collect himself and given a very visible verbal warning, but that happens in every sport. The guys that are good suck it up, congradulate the winner and move on to fight another day.

Why the Brock hate? For a guy who has to cut weight to get to 265, he is extremely quick and spectacularly agile. The UFC should not have given him Mir for his first real fight. Mir is one of the best heavyweights at what would obviously be Lesnars weakspot - submission defense.
Lesnar will be very good, but it will take time. The UFC should have brought him along a little slower, but i understand the economics of why they didn't

you are everything i hate about MMA fans..Lesnar with the proper training over time could become a legitimate fighter in the UFC, just because he was in WWE does not diminish the talent Lesnar has..this man is an all around athlete..agile, fast, tough...he is just a baby in this sport..give him some time and we will see what happens..he was fed to a top heavyweight in Mir and almost put him out in the first minute if it wasnt for the stoppage (whether right or wrong)...its easy to criticize someone of the caliber of Lesnar while sitting behind your computer..how about you try your luck in MMA and lets critique your every move

i too have an hd-dvr and clearly saw multiple shots to the back of the head....i also heard 2 warnings before the stoppage, true it was hard to hear but he did give the warnings....i think mazzagattis worst call was the anthony johnson vs kevin burns, where johnson was intentionally poked in the eye....burns has no business in mma

My number one problem with Brock Lesnar is his consistent rambling on about becoming the "UFC Heavyweight Champion"... how about you win a fight first Brock. And like the most of you have already stated, Heath is going to destroy this overrated meat head. When Brock was fighting Mir there was neither structure nor technicality in any of his striking much less his fighting. And for Brock to blame the ref for losing is definitely the sign of a marquee loser, one whom the UFC definitely does not need to represent their organization.

    Agree with Post #30.
And re Whitehead. The fight was stopped by referee stoppage, not by tap out. Mazzagatti didn't honor Whitehead's call, he stopped it because White just turtled and stopped defending himself intelligently...unlike Marcus Hicks, who was probably dazed but was at least moving around and trying to get some breathing room.
Cofield complains he stopped the Whitehead fight too soon and the Varner fight too late, but their opponents' actions dictate otherwise.
Cofield needs to get his tabloid garbage out of Y! Sports and into Y! omg! instead. Some people here complain about Iole and Meltzer shilling for UFC. I don't think they do, but it's at least arguable. This Cofield guy, though...he takes the taco for just plain lousy journalism.

Same for kimbo slice. people question his legitimacey because he was a street fighter. So what? Everyone has to start from somewhere. So he doesn't have a bjj black belt, last i checked A knockout victory counts just as much as a submission, and this guy is still a ferocious stand up fighter with incedible power. Im not going to lie and say he's got alot of tools, from what i've seen, he's very one dimensional, but punches and kicks are still part of mma aren't they. If your willing to put on the gloves, stand in the octagon, sacrifice your body for the glory of victory, determined to make the person standing across from you wish they had never heard of you, then you're legit as far as im concerned.

oh and boxing sucks now. you get a three week hype about how this guys gonna do that to the other guy, throw in a shove or two at a press conference. Get most of america to shell out 50 dollars, 70 if you get it in HD, and whats the result... a 12 round jab fest that ends in a decision, with both guys having kool-aid smiles cuz they just made the hugest payday of their lives. Boxing is becoming more and more like pro wrestling but still tries to claim legitimacy. At leats pro wrestling doesn't hide the fact that its fake.

for everyone saying brock didnt to do good fighting mir is stupid brock is still a rookie that was his second fight and look what he did now i agree to the strikes to the back of the head but as soon they stood up brock rocked him u got to be fair for a rookie cause thats what brock is he did good vs a former champ mir even tried to armbar him and brock throw him away like that was his kid.
and for those of you who talk about how his fighting style look at chucks he swings for the fences he looks like crap when hes tried cant strike on the spot powers gone look at the last round of the keith fight, brocks big, strong and thats what hes going to use hes going to over power them thats his game plan and if you were that big youd do that too so stop hatin
