Lesnar impresses, but loses UFC debut

LAS VEGAS — Brock Lesnar was everything he was purported to be in his UFC debut.

Unfortunately for the former WWE star, Frank Mir was, too. Mir, the ex-UFC heavyweight champ whose career was nearly derailed by a 2004 motorcyle accident, survived an early pounding to submit Lesnar at 1:30 of the first round Saturday at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.

Lesnar, a college wrestling national champion, easily took Mir down twice in the early going and was pounding away with fists and elbows to the grounded Mir. But Mir worked for submissions and eventually worked into a knee bar that forced Lesnar to tap out.

Mir had failed twice to get an arm bar on Lesnar, whose massive arms made it difficult.

"His legs were leaner, so I went for those," Mir said.

Lesnar took Mir down only 10 seconds into the fight and it looked for a second as if the bout might end early. Lesnar was in Mir's guard and pounding away, but punched Mir in the back of the head, a foul that cost him a point.

As soon as the bout resumed, Lesnar took him down again and began to repeat the pummeling.

"It feels spectacular, because I had Brock Lesnar dropping elbows on my head and I still pulled through that and got a submission," Mir said.

The end came as Mir failed to get an arm bar on Lesnar. Lesnar tried to move away and Mir snatched his ankle and quickly slapped on the knee bar. Lesnar had to tap very quickly.

In only his second mixed martial arts bout, Lesnar took on the challenge of one of the top fighters in the world. He said he would continue to fight.

"I came out trying to pressure Frank (because) I questioned his heart," Lesnar said. "I was just trying to get a bunch of shots in there and I left my leg out there. He's a top-notch jiu-jitsu guy and he got me tonight. He's the better fighter."

He looked good for a guy that was coming in 1-0. He has a long road ahead, but someday he will be THE force in the heavyweight division. If you don't believe me, go check out the look on Mir's face after he got hit a few times.
He got caught, but he looked really good.

Mir caught him after getting pounded for the first 60 seconds. It happens...the win somewhat validates Mir. But the stoppage for 1 punch to the back of the head (Mir turned just before Lesnar threw the punch) was brutal, considering some of the backhead punches that have never cost someone a point.
If you actual think that Lesnar doesn't belong in MMA....you're dreaming. I also thought they overdid putting Mir over after the fight.

the penalty for the blows to the back of the head, which was bogus without a warning, saved Mir

Yea, seriously, the break and deduction may have saved the fight for Mir. It was ridiculous. Brock has side mount and a dominant position. Mir even looked stunned while getting back to his feet. Its ok, you live and learn. It wont happen again.

Some of you have never watched MMA, look at all the top fighters and tell us how many are undefeated. This is the type of contest that you win over time and take advantage of opportunities. Lesnar will be fine, he is too strong and intense not too - just cannot be baited into mistakes.

The point dedction had nothing to do with the outcome. lesnar took him down again and cntinued to pound. He didn't lose by a pooint. He lost because he quit to save his knee.He is still a bad a**, but tonight he tapped, signaling "please stop hurting me." Don't blame the ref. Give Mir credit.

The first 60 sec. of the fight was all Lesnar...Mir had nothing....Mir then used his experience, and better jiu-jistu and pulled it out. He admitted to almost losing the hold...a win, but not a big win for Mir. He thinks he's better than he is.
Sylvia, Couture, and others would still beat Mir.

Illegal punches generally result in a stop, warning or not. Lesnar did something stupd and he paid for it.

The deduction had something to do with it....stopped Lesnar's momentum and gave Mir a quick break to gather himself or the fight could have been over in 45 seconds

he may not have gotten the best of mir tonight , but give him a little time , and no one will remember him in the fake aspect of things . he will be giving some beat downs that will be far from rehearsed.

The referee Steve Mazzagotti should be blamed for robbing the fans of a great fight. He has a history of questionable decisions inside the octogon.

please, just accept it for what it was people, Mir fought through a pounding, as more than one fighter has managed to do in the past, worked what he knows, submissions, and snapped one on.
no one doubted Mir could. the big question mark was whether Lesner had learned enough submission defense to stop Mir from doing it, and we got our answer. it doesn't take away from Lesner, cause frankly he did very well on a big stage, for only his second fight, and he'll come away from this wiser and with a goal to train for. and when he does he'll be back, better.
Lesner said it himself, "He's a top-notch jiu-jitsu guy and he got me tonight. He's the better fighter."
    that's that.

Well, I respect Lesnar but...HA HA. Mir deserved the win. Lesnar will be great later on. Each guy had something to prove. Mir, that he wasnt going to be beaten by a newcomer, and Lesnar, that he is more than a "fake wrestler".
