Some sickos in the blogosphere are reveling over the beating Kim Couture took on Friday in her MMA pro debut at the Thomas & Mack in Las Vegas. I don't get it.

Couture did draw 8,962 to the T & M for the fight but many left sickened.

It wasn't a good night for MMA and it certainly wasn't a great night for female fighting. Couture, 33, was ill-equipped to defend herself. She suffered a badly broken jaw and bled heavily throughout the fight.

Kim Rose smashed Couture with an overhand right seconds into the fight. That punch may have been the one that split Couture's jaw and broke her nose. I was disgusted and uncomfortable sitting two rows from the ring so I can't imagine watching the fight on the ring apron as photographer Tracy Lee did:

The bell rang and Kim Rose rushed in. With a quick flurry of punches, an uppercut found its mark within 5 seconds and had Couture collapsing on the ground. Referee rushed in, ready to stop the bout, but Couture was able to find her bearings and fight back. For the entire 3 rounds, Dave Mandel and I watched as she fought the fight, but wasn't quite "all there". She took a beating, although didn't ever give up, and fought back and gave a beating of her own.

After all was said and done, we were told that the first uppercut split her jaw in two, and the left side was hanging about a quarter of an inch lower than the right. She fought the ENTIRE fight like that, not quitting or giving up. She took a NUMBER of punches to the face, as well as got caught in a few guillotines that for SURE stressed on her jaw. Even an elbow at the throat pushed against the bone had to be excruciating.

Three issues developed today on Las Vegas sports-talk radio where ESPNRadio1100 took calls on the event and Couture for 90 minutes.

Did her husband Randy make an error by not throwing in the towel?

Is the Nevada State Athletic Commission at fault for licensing someone as inexperienced as Kim Couture?

Why was this bout fought with three, five minute rounds? We just watched the much more experienced Gina Carano battle Kaitlin Young with three, three minute rounds in place.

There is no better commission than Keith Kizer and Co. in Nevada. So if it erred in allowing Kim Couture to fight, it's scary to think the kind of matches that could be put together with inexperienced female fighters around the country but lesser qualified commissions.

The sport would be obliterated by the mainstream sports and news media if there were ever a female death in the cage or ring. This should serve as a serious warning.

Kim told Fighthype.com, that she will be back.

UPDATE: Bloody Elbow reacted to this fight. The guys over there did bring up a very important point:

{ysp:block}I wanted to add another thought that occurred to me about this fight. Its not so much that this was a woman's MMA fight. This fight should be questioned regardless of the competitors' sex. Anytime a fighter suffers a major fracture the fight should be stopped between rounds. Its one thing for Frank Shamrock to conceal an arm break from his corner for a couple rounds against Cung Le. Presumably the corner had no idea. But I have to think that Kim couldn't talk to her corner after the first round and they should have known that something was very very wrong.{ysp:/block}

Hard to believe the Scott Smith-Robbie Lawler fight at Elite XC was stopped because Smith got poked in the eye. He wasn't given five minutes to recover and the fight was ended. et Kim Couture is allowed to fight for over 14 1/2 minutes with a broken jaw and nose.

Nice rack. too bad she fights like an amatuer hack. gee, maybe she should learn the first rule. keep your hands up.. mma wants to be legit, but you give a woman this platform for her first fight after she has trained in mma less than a year?? mma is looking more like boxing everyday. actually i dont know of any boxing that is even this much of a farce. to me this is way worse than slice.. at least he was jacking crackheads in backyards. who did she crumple to deserve this exposure???? lame....

Cry me a river! First you people whine because of the recent UFC and EliteXC quick or questionable stops. Now you complain that a fight took too long to stop? Jeesh!

Great fight. Kim Couture just got caught like ALL figthers do. She should keep her head up and just keep going out there and doing her best. The first thing MMA figthers learn is to always keep their guard up, I think Kim just got caught up in the moment and forgot her basics. Who's up for seening Gina Carano vs Kim Rose?

Tim L. It sounds like you have some heart taking all those injuries. But it sounds like you really dont know MMA that well if you are getting that jacked up in one fight. That earned you respect?? What respectable fighting Organization do you fight in?? Have you ever heard the expression 'hit and dont get hit'?? Apparently not. Also sounds like your matchmaker badly over matched you. He or she deserves a beatin... And thats the way it is...........

i simply do not agree that this was an outrageous "non-call" by the ref. kim was on top for most of the fight.

Kim got exactly what she wanted! Not the beating, but a true test of herself and who she is. This one probably could have been stopped...justifiably. But don't jump the gun on stoppages in MMA. Premature stoppages have already robbed fans of great fights, much like boxing. Imagine if the first finally of the Ultimate Fighter was stopped. Yeah...that was such a great fight. One of the most memorable fight ever.
Like it or not, women have just as much gut as men. Kim pushed herself through a night of adversity and will be better from it, fight again or not. That is one tough woman. A bittersweet lesson. Oh yeah, she looked GOOD!

KIm needs to really work on her boxing skills in order to be successful. her take- downs are very good, but she needs to counter her opponent's every move. with extra hard work, she could be an excellent fighter. alot of courage and heart. more power to her. her husband should be proud!!!!

How can they say this was bad for MMA? This fight showed how much heart MMA fighters have and how they are real athletes. To last 15 minutes hurt as bad as she was and still battle is amazing. The ref would have stopped it if it looked like she could not defend herself, and as shown she could.

i didn't see any point at where this fight should have been stopped...only reason why people are freaking out about it is because its a woman who was getting pounded...we praise lots of mma fighters for fighting after breaking a bone during a fight or for coming into the fight w/ an injury and gutting it out...couture broke his forearm against gonzaga and dominated him to retain the heavyweight title...rich franklin broke his hand against dave louseau (i think thats how its spelled) and dominated him to retain his belt when he was champ...and we praise them for how much heart they have...why not praise a woman for showing the same heart that many male mma fighters lack...
it might not have been a pretty sight but kim couture showed a lot of heart for not giving up the fight...

oh and for those people who think that this set back MMA, or the UFC, or other fighting organizations, thats bull... i didn't even know that she was fighting and i've been watching UFC for years, not to mention Pride, WEC, and Elite XC...i think maybe too many people thought this event was a huge event when in comparison to other MMA shows, it was miniscule...this fight won't have any negative impact on MMA

again. no one is saying it should of been stopped. it should of never happened. Maybe on an amatuer card.. i know female boxers that would have killed her in her stand up game alone. she does not deserve kudos for getting jacked up. Her husband who knows this game should have known better and made her train and learn some basics.. But maybe R. Couture does not wear the pants... What a joke of a fight.. whos next?/ Jenna jamison vs. Jenny McCarthy??/

I have been an athlete and had my share of ups and downs, we train hard, sweat and blood just to achieve a goal. We were programmed to dance and embrace pain because the reward taste sweeter afterwards. What most people who never had the training don't understand is that athletes would rather loose a body part if it meant earning respect. Broken bones will heal, but shame of defeat from quitting will hunt an athlete forever.
