The dust-up between Antonio Nogueira and Vinny Magalhaes during last night's episode of the Ultimate Fighter revolved around Vinny thinking that he was better at jiu-jitsu than Nog. Nogueira became interim heavyweight champion due largely in part to his ground game. Vinny won his fight over Jules Bruchez using textbook jiu-jitsu moves. Who is better?
Here is Magalhaes at a BJJ tournament, facing Dan Simmler. You may remember Simmler as the guy who Matt Riddle KTFO in the elimination fights during last season of the Ultimate Fighter. The camera work is shaky, but you get the idea.
This is a collection of Nog's best groundwork in his MMA career, with some stand-up thrown in for fun.
Tell us who you think is better in the comments. The winner will get a chocolate cake with cookie dough icing.*
*Not really. Nog already got that for his birthday!

look i have nothing against you maggie, but you should realize that you are simply not qualified to write about mma. mma is not football or basketball where everything is confined to a particular league, an mma reporter requires a depth and breadth of knowledge you just dont have. its like me thinking im qualified to have a conversation about physics with a nasa engineer because i took physics in high school. like you i would simply be out of my league.

I think it's safe to say that a Parrot would be a qualified replacement for Maggie.
How you can you be in a field of work in which you're light years behind even an enrty level position as far as knowledge?
Yahoo really needs to have someone clean this place up, get rid of the inferior reporting and bring in some quality journalists.
You know Cofield is loving it right now because Yahoo has actually found someone inferior.
Maggie, this reminds me of the famous quote by James Thompson: "If you want to become a PRIDE fighter watch the DVD's".
I think it's great that you're a fan of the sport and are just now getting into it but for those of use who follow this sport religiously we need more qualified reporting.
A good comparison to what you do is say you just started a new job so you know nothing, then your employer hires another employee the very next day, you then approach the newly hired employee and tell him/her that you just started yesterday but you will be the one training him/her.

But "ridiculous"? It's a sports blog. You don't have to read it, f you don't like a little subtle humor every now and then. Don't get me wrong, I disagree with what the writers say sometimes (*see Cofield's blog on Silva's performance), but I don't understand why people waste paragraphs belittling without explaining themselves. Although I don't agree with you, thank you for at least validating part of your disagreement.

I enjoy them all and nearly every MMA fighter came from a background in some form of martial arts or wrestling.
I don't watch TUF so I don't know what Vinny said and if it was in fact disrespectful or if it was just Vinny honestly thinking he would defeat Nog in a purely submission setting so I can't comment on it but as far as a 2-2 record there are plenty of world class fighters who began their careers in similar fashion. Rampage began his career 2-1, Sakuraba lost his first career MMA fight to Kimo, Couture began his career 4-2, Arlovsi lost his first MMA fight and was 3-3 in his first 6 fights, etc.
We can't look at early records as an indicator of what is to become of a fighter because they're still in the transition phase from whatever martial arts background they're coming from to MMA.

Nog's fought and defeated the who's who of MMA with the only blip in his armor being that he was never able to defeat Fedor (but still to date no one has). So his only 4 losses were all to world class fighters, 2 of which were Fedor, 1 of which was a poor decision against Hendo which Nog avenged and the other was a split decision against Barnett which he also avenged.
He was the raining #1 MMA fighter in the world until Fedor bum rushed the scene in 03 and had Fedor never emerged Nog would've held that crown for a very long time and would likely be considered the #1 MMA fighter of all time right now. I've never seen a boring Nog fight or a Nog fight I wasn't impressed by.
The only thing I can think of is that you prefer the standup game which there is nothing wrong with but generally it's wrestlers that people are not overly impressed by, not BJJ practitioners who finish 65% of their wins via submission including 7 different types of submission wins (it's sickening and I don't think there is anyone else in MMA history with 7 different types of submission wins, verbal submission not counted) and especially not one with the prowess of Nog.
Don't use his UFC fights as a guage just as you should never use Wand's UFC fights as a guage. Nog's been int he game for over 9 years and Wand for over 12 and they were in their prime back in 01-06 so what we are seeing now is the latter stage of their career so they are slower than they used to be and nowhere near as expossive yet both are still highly ranked fighters and Nog is a current champion.

Sure Bob Sapp sucks in K-1 and whenever he's fighting a strong striker in MMA. But back when Big Nog and Sapp met in Pride, Big Nog's striking wasn't as good as is it is now and, more importantly, no one knew that Sapp sucked, not even Sapp! Sapp had this insane aura of invincability and he knew that Big Nog had to grapple with him, in other words, Sapp would get a chance to use all 350 lbs of his weight and strength to slam Big Nog.... maybe slam isn't the right phrase....to pick Big Nog up to shoulder height and piledrive Big Nog's head straight into the ring floor. Which is exactly what Sapp did! That move is illegal in UFC for a good reason. I'm pretty sure Big Nog got a concusion, a terrible "stinger" (pinched nerve in the neck that gives you the sensation of fire running down your arm for 10-30 seconds), and probably more. Big Nog was just damn lucky that he's been grappling for so long and built up a grappler's neck otherwise his neck might have been broken. Anyway, Big Nog took 1-2 minutes to shake off the effects and promptly tapped Sapp out. Sure, any good heavy-weight in Sapp's position probably would have been able to finish Big Nog off before Big Nog could have recovered, but how many other heavy-weights could have gotten Big Nog in that position to begin with? Maybe Lesnar or Antonio Silva, but I'm pretty sure Sapp's stronger than both of them and definately heavier, making Big Nog's survival and come-back win that much more impressive.
I hope all of you at least saw the Fedor vs. Tim Sylvia fight. If so, you know that Fedor hits like a Mack Truck. If you haven't seen Big Nog's fights against Fedor, well.....where the f*** you been? 2 of the 3 are the greatest heavy-weight fights I've ever seen! Fedor plants Big Nog in the corner against the ring post and goes to town on Big Nog's face with Fedor's semi-standing ground and pound. The shots sounded like a baseball bat hitting a wall! I'm pretty damn confident that all other fighters in Big Nog's position at that time would get KO'd or TKO'd but he just kept fighting back! The only other time that I've heard ground and pound shots that sounded like that was when Cro Cop broke Barnett's face in the Pride Open Weight Finals. And, yeah, Big Nog lost both times to Fedor by decision, and yeah, his face looked all messed up both times, but we're talking about Fedor here. To even survive aginst Fedor and make it to a decision is a hell of an accomplishment.
In my humble opinion Big Nog is the the toughest, hardest guy in MMA. The kind of guy you would have to kill in order to make him stop coming after you. Combine this extreme toughness with his amazing striking and submission skill set and you have one of the most impressive fighters in all of MMA.

Except that one person said it and suddenly it's representative of "all these people that know nothing about MMA." Keep your shirts on, one person's opinion means squat, and if you're getting this worked up over what ONE person thinks, it won't be long before you're eating your gun.
