Hughes says GSP is boring, overrated

Former UFC welterweight champ Matt Hughes has made it a point this week to repeatedly mention that he wasn't impressed by Georges St. Pierre's win at UFC 87. Hughes told MMAShoot.com that he was so bored by the GSP-Jon Fitch fight that he left the Target Center in the third round. Good thing for GSP and Fitch that Hughes wasn't giving out the post-fight awards. The guys each banked 60k for what UFC called Fight of the Night.

Hughes mentions that the Fitch win should take St. Pierre out of the pound-for-pound debate. This seems to be a minority opinion. Of course, the only guy who has lost to GSP twice is the same one saying that the French-Canadian should disappear from the debate.

Curiously, Hughes also mentions that he thought GSP looked smaller. And he wrote the same thing on his blog. (good tip from CagePotato.com)

"Georges didn’t look as big as he has before and he seemed like he had gotten tired from the first round."

Is this is a thinly veiled attempt at accusing GSP of steroid use?

Sour grapes. I respected Hughes as a fighter a while back, but the sport has passed him by. Wrestler only guys were great and it is still a great discipline to have. But to me, he was not able to bring the rest of his game up to par other more diverse fighters. And lets face it, he got beat on the ground too.. Plus that cocky little smirk he wears is annoying.. He is a tapper that talks a lot of sh3$..

Seems like a lot of Dana's boys push Anderson Silva as the best pound for pound fighter.....I wonder why Fedor or Faber are never mentioned. Matt Hughes is very soured that GSP put a beat down on him. Hughes never seems to give credit. GSP should be considered in any conversation of best Pound for Pound Fighter. Fitch would destroy Hughes as well

Hughes dominated with his ground and pound for a while and he was great. He worked hard on his stand-up but never really cut it in that area. Basically, he cant strike at all. I think he might have a reach advantage over.....hmmmmmm.....ummmmm.....an alligator?

Clint...they are never mentioned cuz Dana White is trying to pull a blindfold over MMA. He is a great promoter. He could sell sand to an Egyptian living in the middle of the Sahara. Dana white is scum. The best company out there with the best fighters is DREAM. Eddie Alvarez should be in voted for to at least be in the top 10, if not top 5.

clint m... i like your comment about uriah faber needing to be mentioned for pound for pound best. that guy is a stud, he can strike, wrestle, and has submission. he hasnt done anything but beat everyone he faces. i dont think he is the best, but he does deserve more props. i wish he would gain about 10 more pounds and try fighting guys like bj penn. then we would see whats up,

i dont see how any of you guys can be a fan of matt hughes. Or for that matter Randy Cotoure. Wrestlers are all the same...just lie on people and do nothing. That is how Randy Cotoure fights. If he thinks hes taking on Fedor, he is dillusional. Chuck knocked him out like it was nothing and he's a LHW. Cotoure has beaten nobody impressive ever AND HE'S OLD. If the Fedor Cotoure fight ever happens I can't wait cuz i'm putting every penny I have on Fedor. It won't even be close. Cotoure is garbage, just like 99% of the UFC.

I agree too! I hadn't seen too many of Fedor's fights and I actually thought randy would have a chance, but after seeing that man's hand speed when he fought Silva I have to think Randy would have no answer. Randy is a legend, but he is in his 40's. Fedor has already said he sees Randy's weakness and will try to exploit it. He will keep it stand up and work Randy. Fedor's ground game is second to none as well and even though he may be able to handle Randy on the ground there would be no reason to go there. Fedor would win by KO in the first round, no doubt about it. At least, Randy doesn't bad mouth and talk trash on people. He is a legend and a true ambassador of the sport.

i could care less about couture but you cant deny him his success and legacy. his skills arent top notch other than wrestling, but his biggest weapon is his heart. hes a tough s.o.b. yes hes old and yes i agree fedor would prob. whoop that as$. but you are forgetting he beat vitor belfort twice, pedro rizzo twice, and he beat chuck and tito once each. all are great strikers, except tito. dont get me wrong i think fedor would win that match convincingly, but couture he has beaten the games best and you cant really rip him for wanting to fight the best once again.

Truth, I agree completely! I want Randy to fight Fedor, not because I would bet on him winning, but because "they" want that fight. Randy has done so much for MMA that if he wants to fight at his age he should be able to. He has beaten a who's who, but a lot of those wins were years and years ago. He isn't the same fighter now, and his age counts against him. He is an absolute legend and I want to see the fight. Too bad, UFC can't let the guy who helped build it into what it is go. Dana talks about wanting the fans to see what the fans are begging for. But he only means it if he makes money. he is lying when he talks about the fans, if he were telling the truth, Randy would be fightin Fedor in OCT.

Great White...sorry dude, but i'm going to have to disagree with you on your randy is a legend and true ambassador. Nothing that guy has ever done has impressed me. His big notable wins are against Chuck Liddel (who he later lost to, badly by the way), Pedro Rizzo (don't get me started on him), Vitor Belfort (same goes for him) and most recently Gonzaga (impressive but who has Gonzaga beaten besides a washed up Cro Cop), and Tim Sylvia (CHUMP). He really hasn't beat anyone that is eye popping. He was fighting in a weak LHW division and then a weak HW division. I say weak LHW division cuz all you so called MMA fans would have seen Chuck fly to Japan to fight in the LHW grand Prix, have Dana White put $1 million down on Chuck to win the whole tournament, only to get obliterated in the second round of the tournament. The UFC's LHW division was WEAK back then. His wins aren't impressive at all, he lies on top of guys and just grinds it out. The only thing I will say that is amazing about Couture is that he is in incredible shape. But other than being 40 soemthing and having a 6 pack, nothing else this guy has done has impressed me. I see no reason to call him a legend or an ambassador.

Liddell had just taken 7 months off, was out of his game for a little bit the first time he fought Randy. You saw what happened when he was on his game. His win against Chuck was a fluke.

yep. ufc should definately make that happen. not bc randy would win, but these two are both legends in mma and everyone wants to see this. i totally agree with ya white hype. couture is a legend in the ufc, thats really a pretty easy argument. it kind of seems like nothing in mma impresses you jtakeo11. i dont get it how or why you are taking credit from randy coutures run through the ufc

Truth...a lot impresses me in MMA. Nothing Randy has done has impressed me. Tatsuya Kawajiri vs Eddie Alvarez was impressive. Fedor/Noguera, Sakuraba/Rampage, Rampage/Silva, Gomi/Diaz, Rampage/Shogun, BJ Penn/Sherk, BJ/GSP, Overeem/Hunt....I seriously could go all day with fights that impress me. Randy fights and none of his fights minus Gonzaga was impressive, and Gonzaga hasn't done anything. Believe me, I'm a huge MMA fan but people get on hooked on some guys like Randy, like Chris Hordeski, AND THEY ARE NOTHING TO BE AMAZED AT (aside from Randy's conditioning).
