Griffin wins a decision

Lightweights: Tyson Griffin (11-1) def. Gleison Tibau (15-5), unanimous decision

Judges’ scores: 30-27, 30-27, 30-27.

Y! Sports score: 29-28, Tibau

Key moment/turning point: Griffin had a five-punch, three-kick combination late in the first round that enabled him to pull out what had been a close round.

Analysis: Griffin was clearly the better striker and landed a number of hard kicks. He did most of his damage in the first round. In the final two rounds, Tibau scored a number of takedowns, though he didn't do much with them. Griffin was able to scramble to his feet and that's probably what got him the victory in a decision that clearly wasn't popular with the crowd.

Everyone I was watching with was pretty surprised at the unanimous 30-27 decision for Griffin.

Y! Sports called this fight 29-28 for Tibau??? What fight were you watching? I agree, the first round was much more one sided than the second two for Tyson but by no means did the brazilian pull off more than 3/4 of one of the remaining two rounds. Every time Tyson was taken down his amazing hip control and scrambling ability got him out of any serious damage or submission attemps. Tibau was obviously just an oversized welterweight cutting down to fight a beast of a lightweight in Tyson Griffin, strength was his only advantage and it wasn't a huge one. I was disappointed that Tyson didn't utilize more low kicks, he did land some pretty sweet ones to the solar plexes of Tibau, and not to mention those amazing liver punches a la Bas Rutten style. 29-28 for Tyson Griffin, no doubt about it. if yahoo called it 29-28 Tibau, they got it right. I respect Griffin as a solid fighter, but he got beat.

Amen to that. If you can't do anything with the takedown once you're down there, you better pray that you have Tito-like gorilla strength and simply knock them out on the canvas like he did to Tanner (nice new pic on UFC's site by the way Evan...goon). Yeah Tibau got a few takedowns, but Tyson stuffed a heck of a lot more...not to mention Tyson's lead leg was WAYYYYY out there the entire fight just begging to be low kicked or scooped up. He wanted the knockout so bad he was willing to spread his legs out and dig in more, knowing if he got taken down he'd easily scramble back to his feet. I can't express more how sick it makes me to think anyone would score this fight for Tibau. At least the UFC got it right, unlike.....oh.....let's say, Bonnar-Jardine? Ha

Man, why does the ufc always give tyson a fight while leaving a lot of more respected and exciting names idle for month. tyson has just been in the league for barely a year and he's had four bouts already. clearly, this is a case of playing favorites. this has happened before to karo, vera, forrest and others. the most unfair is when the ufc gives a title shot to a fighter who has only won one or two fights straight. (when timmy sylvia beat r. rodriguez)
i'm nnot saying they are not exciting, i just want things to be fair for all fighters. we had surely missed jon fitch, kos, kongo, and arlovski. good thing they are coming back. but the new crazy stuff is that machida's next fight will still be next may, and its not a title shot even,
dana white is sick just like britney spears.

I agree with you about Machida....but that's about it. You mention Karo, Vera and Forrest like they're nobody...they are all amazing athletes with endless talent, much more so than Kongo and Arlovski...Fitch has yet to prove himself against top level competition (I don't include Diego as top level). But nonetheless, I think Fitch is for real.
If you're not already on the Tyson Griffin bandwagon, just watch some of his fights. They are rich with talent and excitement...you won't be disappointed. He's marketable, that's why the UFC is on his nuts, and rightly so.
