It was a close decision but the UFC escaped fan outrage because they agreed with judges who sided with Forrest Griffin. It was a fight that could've gone either way but Tito Ortiz is still clearly a heel in the minds of many fight fans. He probably added to their dislike even more when he complained about multiple injuries as part of the reason he lost the fight. The fight was even on two judge's scorecards but the younger Griffin played target practice with Ortiz' face and won a split decision 30-27, 29-28 and 28-29 in a light heavyweight bout to close UFC 106 in Las Vegas. More than a few folks along press row scored it 29-28 for Ortiz.

During his postfight conversation with UFC color analyst Joe Rogan, Griffin mentioned that he broke his right foot (during training camp). That set off Ortiz. He initially gave credit to Griffin but mentioned that he couldn't spar before the fight suggesting that beyond a badly blackened eye, he also had a bulging disk in his back. That's bad news from a guy who just missed 17 months recovering from back surgery.

Attempting to shutup Ortiz, Griffin returned to grab the microphone and say all fighters get hurt in training camp.

Ortiz suffered the eye injury back on Nov. 9 when he was headbutted. That cut down on his sparring over the last 12 days and it showed in his conditioning. The fight went to the third round even on two scorecards but Ortiz had nothing left in the gas tank. Griffin, 30, regarded as a cardio machine, threw everything he could at Ortiz in that final stanza. Over the first three minutes, he landed some effective leg kicks but his punches mostly hit Ortiz' gloves. In the final two minutes with Ortiz taking deep breaths, the UFC legend got popped by plenty of clean shots sealing the deal for Griffin.

Tito's striking on the feet looked sluggish and slow from the get-go. He missed badly with both hands throughout the fight. He kept himself alive by scoring three takedowns on four attempts in the first and second rounds. He didn't deal out a whole lot of punishment until he landed a big elbow on Griffin's forehead midway through the second. That busted Griffin open just over his left eye.

It was a battle between former UFC light heavyweight champs. Griffin (17-6, 8-4 UFC) still has plenty of game in front of him. You have to question how much Ortiz (15-7, 14-7 UFC) has left in the tank. He returned after a nasty falling out with UFC president Dana White. Ortiz rejoined the promotion on a six-fight contract. If he has any shot of lasting through even half of that deal, he really needs to work on his conditioning.

Tito won that fight 29-28! No way he lost 30-27. That judge should be kicked out of MMA forever. I know Tito sucked the third round but he easily won the first 2. There is NO WAY he lost ever round!!!
Rogan knew Tito won the first two rounds and was working the mic real hard to get a 10-8 3rd round for Griffin causing a draw!
    Tito won that fight!

When Anderson Silva fights an "overrated" fighter like Griffin (the guy only recently beat Shogun, Rampage and Ortiz) he outclasses Griffin in every way and makes him look like the amateur many people say he is... BUT when Fedor fights an overrated one hit wonder, he gets his nose broken. I wonder who is the best pound for pound fighter in the world?

This card was absolutely rotten, whoever payed to see this got suckered big time - as usual. Free StrikeForce card was better than 105 and 106, good stuff there.
Better step up your game Dana, people are gonna wisen up and not put down $50 for this pile of $ [profane] much longer.
Baroni is a can, Tito is a can, Koscheck fakes injuries, Davis is a joke as usual. Nog was the only decent fight.

they had it EVEN??? you gotta be kidding me.... you're telling me Ortiz's takedowns had more value in pts than what Griffin did on stand up??? Once again, let's get some REAL MMA judges to do these fights

Forrest did an excellent job with Tito on the ground, and whoever score that fight for Tito to win is lost. That last round should've been a 10-8... Tito did nothing the final round. Tito needs to go hang out on the beach where everything else washes up.

I don't get the judges. How can people who "are qualified" judges see it 30-27 Forrest and another see it 29-28 Tito? Isn't that a huge difference? Can someone explain that to me?Now if I assume one judge is right does that make the other blind?

lol Thanks ufc for taking us back in time. Same outcome, except for a different fighter.
You'd think Tito would have learned at least a few things from Roach.....lol but no.
If Tito can't beat Forrest, then he'll never be champ again.

This is the best news I have heard all day. Anytime Tito loses is good.
I wonder what he really thinks of himself. I mean, he does a great job of selling fights with all his talk. I just wonder if even he gets tired of hearing it.
New 6 fight deal.....0-1 Tito. What now?

BTW, I agree the 30-27 was ludicrous clint. Worse even than the judge that scored the Baroni fight 29-28.

Basically it's what you value more. Is one takedown and some ground & pound better than a reversal and winning the standup game easily? I think the fight should have been a draw. Neither looked like they won. The fact that Tito has a great chin and his whole game is take-downs and ground & pound (not even attempting to pass) makes his fights just boring to watch, unless he gets destroyed. Forrest is always up for a war, but Tito will never give into that. Joe Rogan is having a difficult time selling fights after tonight, especially with the Thiago Volkmann fight and the Burns Koscheck poke-fest.

Hunter - lol You bring up Fedor in a fight that has nothing to do with him? Jeesh. Btw, I'm pretty sure the later reports were that his nose wasn't broken. So he got cut in the fight, hes prone to cuts. Big whoop.
