He's one of the true gentlemen of the sport, but you had to expect UFC welterweight champ Georges St. Pierre would fire back at Matt Hughes after the former champ ripped his performance at UFC 87.

In interviews and on his blog, Hughes repeatedly said that he thought GSP's fight was boring and that he looked smaller physically.

Was Hughes angered by the fact that St. Pierre said the Fitch fight was the toughest of his career?

"(Hughes) was not the toughest fight," stated St. Pierre when asked the question by Joe Ferraro of The Fan 590 in Toronto. "You just have to look at the result of the fights. Jon Fitch is part of the new breed of mixed martial arts fighters. He's at another level than these guys. (The older fighters) don't realize that sometimes."

GSP also went on to say that Hughes had better get back his hunger if he expects to beat Matt Serra down the road.

"If Matt Hughes stays the same as his last couple fights, he's gonna lose. He looked like he didn't do the sacrifice to be ready for the fight (against Thiago Alves at UFC 85). Mentally, he didn't look like he had the drive anymore."

St. Pierre told Ferraro that because of the injuries suffered against Fitch, he can't train for three more weeks. He's planning on taking a trip to Brazil before getting back to the gym on a full-time basis.

GSP is to classy. He had some softballs about Hughes he could have hit out of the park, but took the high road. I can't believe I am saying this, but I hope Serra makes him tap. Hughes and Rampage are both in the running for douche bag of the year!

PS - GSP is a class act all the way! Interesting at the end of the interview he says he is in contract negotiations with the UFC. I hope they pay him big $$$ He deserves it....and before any BJ Penn Fight!!

It's funny I live on Long Island and went to train with Sera's boxing coach Ray Longo for a very short time but refuse to root for Sera because he, to me, is just another cocky LI guido. However, I hope he beats the piss and blood out of that jesus freak Hughes. GSP deserves all the respect in the world for the way he handles himself in and out of the ring.

I pretty much agree with both Hughes and GSP. Except for Hughes possibly losing to Serra, thats ridiculous. Further what we are seeing is possibly Hughes getting his hunger back. I admire both fighters.I picked the winner in each of their fights and if I was to pick the winner of their next fight it would be Hughes. Before all the experts chime in mark my words and remember what Hughes did to BJ Penn. Go ahead put your money on GSP . He is going to lose the next one to Hughes.

I applaud GSP for verbally digging back at Hughes while at the same time remaining completely professional. He gave praise to Fitch while pointing out Hughes weakness and lack of dedication at this point of his career. He beat him in the cage and in the war of words.

In Hughes' defense, he has fought gnarly fighters right before they enetered their prime or while they were in it. And his most recent losses is to an up and comer in the UFC and to GSP twice. His style doesn't fit the UFC standard anymore (same fighting style as Couture....but that's a different blog). Great wrestler, crap at everything else, for the most part. I would like to see Serra just eff him up on the ground, just put him in a painful armbar and just slowly hurt him, that would be nice. Joe Rogan can scream and yell about Matt Serra's Jiu Jitsu, THAT is stellar. It'd be interesting, 2 old dudes. Wouldn't be shocked if Hughes came back after and fought some crap fighters just for the money. He could still whoop on them.

Very true "GREAT White" not only did GSP get under his skin but mentioned Hughes wasnt the strongest and that St. Pierre said the Fitch fight was the toughest of his career.

GSP is one of the best. No one can argue against that. However if I had to pick one fighter fighting right now to win a fight and my life depended on them winning it wouldn't be GSP. It would be Anderson Silva or BJ Penn. I personally think that BJ Penn's best days are ahead of him now he has become serious about conditioning. He is one of the most skilled well rounded fighters. I am looking forward to the meeting between GSP and BJ Penn.

GSP was just being honest. He dominated both fights against Hughes especially the second one. He just got caught with an arm bar with a few seconds left in the round in the first fight. I think GSP will walk through Penn like he did the first fight. He's only gotten better since then and Penn has only got cockier. There is no way their first fight should have even been a split decision. GSP dominated 2 rounds and the first round was could have gone either way.

That was as nice as of a way for GSP to say Hughes is washed up. The old guard such as Hughes, Ortiz, and Mark Coleman who are all wrestlers never extended their game. Thank goodness this sport has evolved

I don't think it's that Hughes' style doesn't fit the UFC anymore. I think he just got too old fast. I think as soon as you lose a half step in this sport, that's it. Guys like Randy Coulture are the exception. All the wars Matt Hughes had added up and he just doesn't have it now. He said when he was an Ultimate Fighter coach that he may only have a couple fights left in him. I think he was wrong - he could have retired then.
If Matt Hughes could fight like he did 5 years ago, he could still compete with GSP. It's not the "New Breed", it's just the Old Matt that caused the decline IMO.

Ha ha ha, thats a strange view of the fight moneybagz. I thought Bj kicked his butt most of the fight. Penn did run out of gas at the end but won it on my card.

#22 matt Hughes has gone down hill faster than you think; he did compete with GSP the first time a couple years ago and made him via arm bar. He left the chart when GSP fought his way back to the top and challenged him agan and dominated him. Now, it's all over for Hughes. I'm not sure he can beat Sera, but I'll be pulling for him since I think Sera is a bigger jerk than Hughes.
    GSP-Penn should be an explosion.

GSP is excellent at stuffing Hughes shot . That changes the whole fight in GSP favor. I feel a better setup coming from Matt. If Hughes puts him down and I think he will, its over. Thats the key to the whole fight. Matt has to put him down. People are dismissing Hughes and I am surprised. The guy is an unbelievable finisher. I am impressed with GSP defensive wrestling ability, his set ups for his strikes yet I question his ability to absorb punishment.

I am a queens guy and was in Matt Serra's school years ago for a very short time (hurt my back) and he is a class act. I always root for him and love GSP as well. I never ran into GSP but he he seems geniune and is a great fighter. Matt Hughes is @ss and needs a beating for trying to force his religious beliefs upon others. Every time he gets a beating I sit there and laugh!! GSP- Penn will be another great fight for the sport and for the fans. Serra- Hughes while I want to see, will probably end up being a boring fight
