Just weeks after his second-round loss to Brock Lesnar at UFC 100, Frank Mir thinks that he didn't go about things the right way.

"I think I should respected the wrestling a little bit more. I really was under the impression that we would fight on our feet a little bit better. I thought he would avoid the ground with me and want to knock me out."

"The times we were on our feet, I was more successful, but the bad news was that we were only on our feet for about 15 seconds in the round and a half that we fought. I got pretty much owned on the ground. I need to work more wrestling, and I also need to put on a little bit more size. I think 245 was a good weight as far as maybe everybody else in the heavyweight division, but fighting Brock, there was too much of a size difference, due to the fact that he had great technique also."

"It wasn't just because of his size that he was able to nullify my technique, but he used his size. He knew how to position his hips, and block my hips, and hold my arm. He did things that I didn't really expect because of his reach. I think I went in with too much of a gameplan, and I wanted it to go one way, and I tried to force it that way."

But Mir isn't looking back at the loss to Lesnar any more. Instead, he is looking forward to working his other job, cageside announcer for the WEC. In particular, he is excited to see, in Mir's opinion, the top pound-for-pound fighter in the world, Miguel Torres.

"I don't think there is anyone in the world who can beat Miguel Torres at a guts and blood battle because he is so technical, but at the same time, he is so vicious. He loves those fights where he's bleeding, you're bleeding, you're trying to kill each other,  you're trying to break his ankle, he'll break your ankle. He's such a fierce fighting spirit that if you call that out at him, you're awakening the sleeping giant. It's almost better not to put him in a war."

Biased for Torres?

After the last Torres fight, a five-round decision over Takeya Mizugaki, Mir was criticized for favoring his friend, Torres, while commentating on the fight. Mir acknowledges the criticism, but he doesn't believe it's warranted. To Mir, the fight was always Torres' to lose.

"All of the judges had Miguel winning going into the fifth round. Miguel did not do what a lot of other champions do, which is go into a late round and sit on a lead. He could have bloodied his face up with a few jabs, and avoided the inside game, and would have won the round and won the fight with no risk to his title. But what he did was come forward. He came forward to viciously destroy Mizugaki in a way that I don't see a lot of other champions doing."

Torres-Bowles isn't the only fight Mir is excited about for WEC 42. He is also looking forward to the bout that will likely set up the next challenge for the bantamweight belt.

"I'm excited about Dominick Cruz and Joseph Benavidez, because the winner will be fighting for the title. Joseph Benavidez has such an unorthodox fighting style. I think sometimes he gets the wrong impression, it's not that I'm dissing his style, it's just that technically, I would tell people, 'No, you don't throw a punch of your back foot,' he does it over and over again, but to great success. I think some people made the same statements about Lyoto Machida, myself included. He's doing things that shouldn't work, and he's the undefeated light heavyweight champion"

"Dominick Cruz, I love his style. His standup is a little more classical, as far as phenomenal angles, and good foot work, and phenomenal pace. Both these guys are some of the hardest workers in the bantamweight class, so I'm really excited about that fight."

There is actually not a fight on the entire WEC card that Mir isn't excited about. He rattled through the entire card, knowing the intricacies of each fighter in the WEC. Even on the the undercard, he said he can't wait to see Marcus Hicks take on Shane Roller in what he called "the battle of the guillotines." Mir's enthusiasm, technical knowledge and the fact that he knows the fighters well make him one of the more interesting MMA announcers around. We'll see on Sunday, August 9 at 9 p.m. ET on Versus if he can keep the bias in check.

I'll give Mir credit as a knowledgeable and experienced fighter and martial artist; so he brings great credibility to the announcing position. I also give him props that he finally seems to be a little more humble about the Lesnar experience (I'm gonna save those "should've respected his wrestling a little more" and "pretty much got owned" quotes in the back of my mind for the next Lesnar/Mir fight though, just in case he needs a reminder). An apology for all that pre-fight trash talk would be nice too; but I won't hold my breath. "Thanks Brock, for beating some respect into me"

It takes balls to admit your mistakes publically. I saw Spike's special leading up to UFC 100, and Mir was cocky. A rubber match would be cool.

How come no one understands why Brock was never good for WWE! He was too much of a professional and a beast to deal with! This has been a long time coming and he's gonna keep on suprising those who think just because he was in WWE acting, that he can't take punishment! I can name a few old skool wrestlers that would've given alot of these UFC dudes a serious whippin! The bottom line is "Never underestimate Anyone"!

You know for all the trash talk that Mir did, to come out and admit that you were outperformed and to compliment someone who was throwing the trash back takes some cojones. Mir is a real respectable dude and I hope the Cheick Congo fight goes through because that will be a real good fight.

Im a huge fan of Mir's. I think ppl have written him off after that loss to lesnar, which is absurd. Mir is one of the smartest guys in mma and he's very well rounded too. I hope he bounces back, keeps training hard and gets his belt back. A rubber match would definately be awesome and deserved if they both win their next fights.

The nice thing about Frank Mir is no matter how his career as a fighter goes, he'll still be a great commentator with more experience than any pencil-pusher out there. Same goes for Kenny Florian.

The trash talk is for hype, to sell tickets and ultimately to earn more money. At least I hope it is.
Think back to Tyson's days. He was biting peoples' legs and threatening to push peoples' noses into their brains in pre-fight interviews. But afterwards he always hugged his opponents and admitted what it was all about.

Excellent article! That is the great thing about MMA and a lot of it's fighters. They know the sport really well and are dedicated to the sport in all ways. As much crap as Mir talks and it makes you hate him, things like his post fight talks and commentary work for the WEC make you like him again. I think it's the hate him, love him, hate him, love him that makes Mir an interesting fighter and person.

Lesnar is going to rule this division for years. If the UFC can get Fedor in the next year than I think Fedor can give him a run for his money and has a puchers shot, but if you saw the Fedor vs. Arlovski fight you saw an older slower Fedor with the same knockout power, except that Arlovski was destroying him on the feet. Brock is a beast though and Fedor is old so I think Brock would ground n pound him to a TKO victory in rnd 1, I'm serious about this Fedor fans. The only guy in the division than can match Lesnar's strentgh is Carwin, everyone keep an eye on him. He will beat Valasquez with a knockout. Carwin v. Lesnar in Feb. unless UFC gets Fedor than, that will happen in Feb. Good luck to the heavyweight division, Brock is just getting better and better and your hero's are getting older ie Couture and Fedor. Step aside ladies it's time for the future of the division and it is Brock Lesnar like it or not.

Nigron: You mean like how Brock Lesnar admitted his tirade was unprofessional and apologized for it?
GSPFan: I definitely agree there. Mir is an excellent commentator. Makes you think UFC should switch to a 3-man crew with a revolving door of fighters and past fighters like Mir, Florian, and Couture. As irritating as Gus and Mauro were, at least Elite XC put Frank Shamrock on the shows. While Shamrock is nowhere near the broadcaster that Mir and Florian are, at least he knows what he's talking about, and he wouldn't call Petruzelli KO1 Slice the most shocking event in MMA history...or whatever he called it...nor would he mention his 25 cm pole in reference to Carano.

    SpaceAce makes an interesting point-
Mir really does play the bad guy role well in pre-fight, hype mode; but once it's over, he's a great martial artist, good sport, knowledgeable commentator (I also agree w/ having the fighters- at least the ones w/ some personality, at cageside) and seemingly an all-around decent guy. Interesting that a few ppl are interested in a Lesnar/Mir "rubber match" though, seeing as how Lesnar completely dominated both fights (even the one he lost, which was his UFC debut, btw, and the biggest, luckiest win of Mir's career, maybe in mma history), and there's a good chance that Mir would look like a big rubber ball as Lesnar bounces him all over the cage- again! But hey, I'd still pay to see it...

Rob: You are correct. Mauro is a tool and his commentary makes me want to watch the fights with the volume turned down. "Tide couldn't clean up that dirty boxing!" I get douche chills every time he throws out his ridiculous statements. Good article. I've alway's been impressed with Frank's knowledge and love for the sport.

Mir does come off as arrogant and annoying at times, but I really respect how analytical he is. even though he was talking trash during the ufc 100 countdown interviews, he also mentioned his gameplan back then, and it was really detailed. this guy knows how to analyze a situation. unfortunately, brock just had a more effective gameplan than mir during their fight.

sorry, that wasn't humility with mir. it was a quiet way of making an excuse. "i thought he was gonna stand up and try to knock me out" BS dude.lesnar gave proof in my book that the first match would have ended the same way if mir's boyfriend steve wouldn't have called A quick foul with no in ring warning giving mir a second chance otherwise it would have been a 45 second distruction of a washed up faliure. i was rooting for mir the first time, i was all mma purist about lesnar myself like alot of others but the guy is a beast and he is one of the most dominant and decorated ncaa wrestlers to grace this sport with their ability. sorry kos, yer a tool.

Brian K... Fedor is an old 32 or 33, and Randy is forty something. Both are past their prime, you know it too. Fedor got a knock out on Andre "glass chin" Arlovski... not that impressive. I'm going out on a limb to say that Fedor couldn't beat Cain Valasquez. Fedor is spent, and I guess it doesn't matter anyway b/c his management team has K1 as their priority and not Fedor or his legacy, as evident in todays presser. Lesnar is still going to eat everyone alive in the hwd.
