Do-gooder Bob Reilly is fighting the masses in the state of New York. But it looks like the New York Assemblyman's push may be in trouble according to Rick Leventhal from FoxNews. There is simply too much money and common sense out there to continue the state ban on mixed martial arts.

It's amazing how government officials are so vehemently against something they know nothing about:

"I'll express ignorance of this sport, but after Bob described what a vicious sport it was, it was voted down by everybody on the committee," said Assemblywoman Francine DelMonte, D-Niagara Falls.

Reilly has pretty much criticized anyone who watches, trains in or participates in the sport:

"The people who are drawn to mixed martial arts are attracted by the brutality of it, which goes above and beyond what you see in boxing. It seems, to me, beyond logic that we in the state legislature would consistently pass laws against physical abuse and physical intimidation, everything from domestic abuse to bullying in schools, and then allow this stuff. We should not be encouraging the glorification of this kind of violence."

Maggie Hendricks put it perfectly -- don't expect Reilly, or anyone on his committee, to become huge fans of the sport. But it's not too much to expect that an elected official would not spout off about the sport, and then vote against it, with such willful ignorance.

there's the problem right there in his quote...mentioning domestic abuse and bullying. that has nothing to do with mma, wouldn't you say that's a parenting issue? if you can't teach your kids the difference between right and wrong it has nothing to do with what the parents ALLOWED them to watch on tv. how many action flicks are filmed entirely or partially in new york every year? where's the ban on that stuff? kids see that too right? the old salty ignorant [profane]s that run our country are friggin idiots most of the time when it comes to any topic post cold war era.

Steven, I would agree with you, but after watching UFC 92, I put my fiance in a triangle.

I don't watch Fox News to get my MMA information, much like I don't come to this blog to get a foreign policy update. Who cares what Fox News thinks?

also reported on Fox News today:
"the greedy right wing conservatives- (pause) Hail Bush!- stole some more money from the middle class again today, and, in a shocking move- gave it to themselves. In other news- mixed martial arts- the fastest growing sport in america. We know nothing about it, except that a few other ignorant politicians don't like it, so we don't either."

You notice how Cofield gave Maggie a itty bitty amount of props at the end of his blog while all along knowing that SHE ALREADY WROTE ABOUT THIS STORY!!! Good job Cofield, I bet Maggie wasn't upset at you stealing her work, because you complimented her.

Martial arts teach discipline and respect, MMA athletes show ten times more class and responsibility than other professional athletes. This whole bully notion is complete BS. Let them speak to any of the UFC champions and they'll get a better picture

Sorry, I just think it's funny that you of all people are accusing others of "knowing nothing about the sport". Pot says, "kettle, you're black."

It is brutal. But that doesn't make it wrong. I eat beef and that is brutal too. Boxing is sanctioned and brutal. Rodeo. Equestrian show jumping (more die in that sport than any other) . Riding the NYC subway next to some freak that crapped his pants... That is brutal... it is all relative. How many HS football players snap their necks each season?? It is crazy to ban it. But in a way, it gives MMA and the UFC free press that money cant buy. It will get passed one day soon.

Vehemence is usually in inverse proportion to knowledge. The less you know about something the easier it is to hold a strong opinion about it and disdain those who decline to defer to you. If you know little, then you needn't be bothered about distractions like facts.
