Kenny Florian's convincing win over Joe Stevenson ensured that he will have a shot at the lightweight belt. But when? Current lightweight champ B.J. Penn will fight Georges St. Pierre for the welterweight title on January 31, 2009. This means that Penn won't be available to fight again until April, at the earliest. Matt Hughes mentioned that he will fight Matt Serra in mid-April. Perhaps Penn-Florian could headline the card.

A layoff like this is not odd for Florian. After choking out Din Thomas in September of 2007, he didn't fight again until he TKO'ed Joe Lauzon in April of this year. He had no trouble shaking off the cage rust and winning, and then going on to two great wins -- a decision against Roger Huerta and Saturday's win over Stevenson --  later this year.

Fans, on the other hand, aren't quite as patient. One blogger thinks that the title fight will not happen because the UFC will force Florian into a fight before his bout with Penn. Posters at different forums discussing the UFC agree. And what happens if Penn beats GSP? Will he face the top welterweight challenger, Thiago Alves, or Florian first? No matter what happens, the "superfight" between Penn and GSP will affect many other fighters, especially Florian.

Yeah thats true I believe there will be a fight that Florian will be thrown into until he gets his title shot. Now if Penn does beat GSP he will face the top welterweight challenger, Thiago Alves, or Florian and believe Alves will be the one chosen unless they do a Alves vs Florian. things change we all know and have seen that. Now we as fans will see if UFC will listen to what the fans want and see fight!

I'll give u that "Kenflo" is a stupid nickname; and kinda looks like he's on crack in that pic (man- what would he look like if he was actually on crack?!?); but I'll take a "Kenflo" over a Kimbo in my sport anyday. Have fun paying $60 to watch Kimbo box!

and i know some people dont like the fact that he circles his opponent
and pick and chooses thru exchanges
but he fights which style best fits him
and gives his opponent a hard time

Jay, Kimbo will never get into boxing. If that is the direction that the Shaws thought they could take him, obviously that would of been their first choice as that is the main sport they F Up.... He would maybe, make a good sparring partner if another HW wanted some fresh meat. i am sure he could get in a HW boxing camp for $400 a week.. He would be good work for any HW that needed to get confidence back... Sort of like a heavy bag that breathes...

so apparantly that answers the question of whether Kimbo would be as "well recieved" by true boxing fans as he was by true mma fans... poor guy- Even in an outdated, dying sport that it's own athletes admit is 2nd to mma- Kimbo just can't get a break...

I love how boxing fans like to crap on mma. I have competed in both and I must say, without a doubt that mma is A LOT harder. The training, the fights, all of it. There is no grappling, submissions, elbows, knees, kicks, ect to worry about in boxing, there are like 100 more things to consider when fighting in mma.

It's all for money and we all know this. Boxing for many years we have known about Don King and promotions this guy holds. Kimbgo would so give in and go into the sport for the money. then we will have another EliteXC bought concerning money and how the fight should turn out.

chano: alves is a welterweight and kflo is a lightweight, so they wouldnt fight, especially since alves is a huge welterweight.
If bj beats gsp (which i think will happen) bj will be forced vacate the lightweight belt and then defend the welter belt vs alves.
With the lightweight belt vacant, kflo would get a shot vs whoever the other top contender is to crown a new lightweight champ.

The real question is Florian really wanting to take a break from fighting until his title shot is coming up. Now would that be a good thing to do?
Knowing that your up for the title wouldnt you continue to stay sharp and make your striking more powerful for whats ahead and getting that title? We all know Alves on his last two fights againts Hughs and Josh Koscheck that he was reaching for the title already. He worked the stand up plus the ground game that lead him to both victory's.
Now who will Dana think will be more of a threat to the champion Alves or Florian.
