The push continues for women's fighting to get on a bigger platform. With EliteXC gone, the sport is in a holding pattern. We keep hearing that women's fighting is legit, often steals the show at mixed martial arts events and may be better than the men's side. If so, why hasn't someone stepped up to give the sport more exposure? Is sexism blocking the effort? Or is the sport simply not at a high enough level lacking the depth to really put forth a consistently good product?

Fox's Fight Game did a pair of pieces on women's fighting featuring star Julie Kedzie (pictured on the left). Mike Straka presented a good angle -- is women's fighting better because they can't knock each other out? Promoter Jeff Osborne says that the women trump the men:

"It's more about fighting [with the women]. With the men, it's more about an ego fighting not to lose. The women may not have the big arms and shoulders and punching power of the men but the women can take a lot of more punishment. And their gas tanks are better."

I'm not buying the gas-tank argument. I've seen too many women's fights where even with three-minute rounds both women were out of steam by the middle of the second round. Now watching fighters drop their hands and take bigger shots because they're exhausted may be more entertaining to the masses but I'll take a pass. Women do seem to take a lot more clean shots. Maybe that's because of slower defensive reflexes. But I do believe Straka is onto something. There is a bloodlust with many fight fans who prefer a sloppy three-round slugfest to a well-executed knockout.

Strikeforce and smaller organizations like Palace Fighting Championship, which just signed Erin Toughill (pictured on the right), may be as high as female fighting rises anytime in the near future.

I think 3 minute rounds was brought in, yet again, to favour Gina Carrano who was used to 3 minute rounds from her kickboxing days. Even the weight division was brought in to suit her, and yet she consistently has trouble making weight.

I think that maybe there is a fear of backlash from some areas. But once Women's MMA gets a shot, they will see it for what it is: A new dimension to the sport (Thanks for the line Louie!). I for one support Women's MMA, not for the fact that its women beating the hell outta each other, but because sometimes it can be more exciting than the regular fights. UFC and the WEC should just get on the ball and showcase it.

Sorry I complained about the lack of mma news..I should have known it could get worse...
Spartan women used to be bad to the bone you'ed have to donkey pound thier ass to get some play, I personally like my women in shape but with a certain softness about her.....But then again if some dude trys to rob us maybe she could help out, or even protect me at the bar...Hmmmmm... sounds cool, I like the idea now a couliflower ear and missing two fron teeth fighting sex machine...Then busting down to nothing and practicing rear naked chokes or north south toe holds might be erotic...

Ican2, LMAO, I agree with "some" of what you said, especially about the certain amount of softness. I don't want a woman who is that firm, missing teeth or effed up ears either. That's if I'm gonna Fuk them. I like women's MMA so I'm good with them training as hard as they can.

There's nothing wrong with women fighting, but it's not as good as men's MMA. Less skill, less cardio, and less power. I'd rather watch skilled fighters fighters than a brawl.

Karl A that sounds very..... dirty
I think women who have the inclination to fight and train hard to do it should showcase their talent and get good billing and pay for it. I like the fights, I like to keep myself healthy, but bashing someone is not MY gig. The interest for the women is there though a funny mix of sexual interest and pure aggression. I would rather be the corner woman though, inspiration and motivation. Or even better Iwould like to be in Dana's shoes or at the very least walking beside him in business. Hey Dana, need a negotiation partner? You can get more flies with honey than vinegar!!!!!! Fightchica

Women's MMA will never make it. As with other sports, the women's product just isn't compelling enough. If you take away the attractiveness factor, they just aren't talented enough. Look at basketball and tennis - without big names or very attractive women, they are huge money losers. And don't pile on Dana White - if this were such a great idea and he's (obviously) passing on it, some other smart businessperson would be all over it. The fact that they aren't speaks volumes. There's only a finite market for men's MMA - it's never going to be the NFL, NBA, or baseball. Women's fighting market is even tinier in comparison.

Fightchica, what was so dirty? I was just replying back to Ican2 about the other side of women. I did say Fuk, probably shouldn't have said that. I thought I did a decent of job of saying that I like women's MMA and supporting the issue...as I always do. If they fight they should get their paycheck just like everyone else, if they fight their way up and into the mainstream like everyone else. By all means put them on the fight card, give them their weight divisions and pay them accordingly. As far as the sexual interest and pure aggression goes...if an attractive woman is involved in sports she will be noticed as more than an athlete. There isn't a man alive that has watched womens beach volleyball and not noticed the attractiveness of the athletes. It's a purely natural instinct. Women do the same thing. Tom Brady was harrassed to hell by women wanting to marry him. Alot of women wet their panties over Vin Diesel...please don't say it's because he's a talented actor...he isn't.
Dangitt lady, you always put me on the defense. I don't want to offend anyone out here....unless I really want too and then it's pretty obvious. You're a pretty good blog police.
    Go womens MMA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ican2, Mudd, whip cream, hot dog on a stick. Sounds like you and I have been to some of the same high quality establishments. LOL

Mark S that's quite the generalization my friend. I understand your point and agree with you on a small scale, but to just say that women aren't talented enough is off the mark quite a bit. there's plenty of talented and potentially great women fighters out there, there's just not enough of them yet to be able to put on consistent good matches and not enough people such as yourself willing to give them a chance. If you had 20 more figters like la rosa, carano, cyborg and a few others you wouldn't be singing such a tune...there's plenty of talent there it just takes time and numbers. and not all of them are attractive which you eluded to, but if you think that men aren't marketable for the same reasons than you're mistaken again. Do you think Huerta would've been pushed so hard if he wasn't so pretty? if chuck didn't look like such a badass you think as many people would've remembered him? why do you think jens pulver never got much love....cuz he's ugly. the list goes on and on dude, that argument is moot.

Ican2, I totally understand your comments about FIGHTCHICA. I find her intriguing as hell. Maybe it's because she's out here and doing more than holding her own among all of us. You know, the type of woman that would leave you with a smile on your face but when she said "you need to take me to dinner" you would say yes mam and book reservations at the nicest eating joint in town. I haven't found one like that yet.
There was a cover charge and drinking glasses where you were? Hell I vaguely remember sawdust floors. A real top quality place.

I think the reason MMA hasn't truly embraced female fights is because they think that it will eventually lead to male vs. female contests. MMA is having a hard enough time getting mainstream media attention without the religious whack jobs coming out of the woodwork because some half whit promoter put a guy and a girl in the ring against each other. MMA and the sports world in general are not ready for it. Let's let MMA get established and legitimized before we add a woman's division. How many years did it take before the WNBA came along? Females in boxing? Female fighter pilots in the military? Female stock car drivers? It takes time.

Rob F, excuse me....but you're an idiot. i didn't even finish watching that link once i realized they were sparring/rolling in a controlled environment with a bunch of their friends/training partners around. "let's get established before we add a woman's division?" it's already added dude, that's why we've seen women's fights at plenty of mma events for quite a long time now. who is this "they" that you speak of? you said "mma" hasn't truly embraced women's fights, but who is that? i would guess by "mma" you mean all the different promotions....but if they were the ones that were scared, wouldn't they just not put those fights on? your theory is whack man...and funny

Karl A ease up hon I was only teasing. Yo, you don't think that the sexual attraction doen't work on me with all that male flesh? Hello!!! Guys.. Karl A Ican2 thanks for the compliment, but there is no need to be scared. Dirty.. think Christina Agulera(sp) I am a clean girl but no prude. Why Karl A; why so you think I let the comments about Ican2 wanting to jump in my box or down my throat go? With the comments I made did I not set myself up for that? Hell yes I did.
I put you on the defensive for sure there Karl A you want to treat me like a lady no harm in that I like it. All you bad ass bloggers being all gentlemennly like to me. Sweet. Damn straight you'd take me to a good restaurant, to make up for eating all my fine cookin' and give me a day off!! Dancing too dammit!!
Rob F there would never be male on female fights. And any fool woman who would want that shot in the men's Fly, Bantam, Feather, or Light weight division no matter how good she is is asking for more than she can handle.
I am for equality but there are physical differences that surpass equality in the ring.
Once there is more women willing and able to fight with any skill the market is there and I am sure they (Promoters) will be all over it.

you have to get every match sanctioned by the state's athletic commission, and the same people that would typically be worried about women fighting men (some board of no-mma-knowledge senior citizens) would be the ones that would control whether or not that would happen....you see the disconnect Rob F?
