Heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko, the top-ranked fighter in the Yahoo! Sports Mixed Martial Arts Top 10 poll, will fight on free American television on New Year's Eve.
Andrew Simon, the CEO of HDNet Fights, said the cable network HDNet will televise the Dec. 31 fight card in Saitama, Japan featuring Emelianenko live, which will be part of 24 live fight cards the network will air in the next year.
An opponent has yet to be finalized, Simon said.
HDNet Fights, owned by billionaire Mark Cuban, has entered into a partnership with M-1, the promoter which in October unexpectedly signed Emelianenko away from the UFC. The deal calls for Emelianenko's next three fights to be broadcast on HDNet.
Cuban is positioning himself to become one of MMA's power brokers. He now owns his own MMA company, owns a television network on which he can broadcast the fights and has an ownership interest in American Airlines Arena in Dallas in which he can stage them.
Simon said HDNet Fights is open to working with other promoters and said it has deals to televise fight cards promoted by the IFL, SportFight and Ring of Combat, among others. He said fighters from those organization could also fight HDNet Fights-contracted fighters on HDNet Fights cards.
Simon said the live start time of the New Year's Eve card hasn't been determined, though it's likely to be 6 a.m. Eastern/3 a.m. Pacific. He said it will be repeated "at a vastly more reasonable hour for most people" later in the day.

Wht does it say about the UFC HW division when a 40 something year old comes back and defeats the UFC champ? Weeeeeaaaakkkkk.....
What Fdeor and Randy did may be the best thing for MMA in the long run. The way the UFC controls there fighters is a joke. Fedor is not obligated to fight with the UFC.

The only reason a Couture/Fedor fight is going to happen is because Randy is leaving the UFC to CHASE after that fight. That fight was preposed to Fedor by the UFC along with his contract, and he RAN from it!! Plain and simple! And if Fedor is actually making more money with this other organization, its only because they have no other QUALITY fighters to pay. A champion is suppose to be willing to take on anybody, anywhere, to prove their the best. Fedor has not done that. There's only two REAL heavyweight champs in MMA, him and Randy. If he wanted to prove himself, why'd he run?
