BROOMFIELD, Colo. — Nobody expected the light heavyweight bout between James Irvin and Houston Alexander at Ultimate Fight Night 13 on Wednesday to last long.

Both men love to brawl and have knockout power in both hands.
But what happened at the Broomfield Events Center was almost hard to believe. Irvin knocked Alexander down with a right hand and then landed two punches while Alexander was on his back.

Referee Steve Mazzagatti jumped in just eight seconds in and stopped it to a chorus of boos. It tied the mark for the fastest end to a UFC fight. Don Frye knocked out Thomas Ramirez at UFC 8 on Feb. 16, 1996.

Alexander wasn't pleased, but Irvin said he simply isn't aware of what had happened.

"He wasn't even looking at me," Irvin said. "I clipped him and he went down and I looked at his eyes and he was looking off to the right. He was bleeding out of both of his nostrils. He wasn't even looking at me. The third punch when he was down was the best punch of all of them."

Irvin raced across at the bell and threw a "Superman punch," jumping in the air while throwing the right.

It connected on the chin, knocking Alexander down. Irvin quickly went for the finish. His first punch missed, landing on the top of Alexander's back. He grazed Alexander with a right to the chin, then landed a hard right to the face.

That prompted Mazzagatti, who has made a number of controversial stoppages in other fights, to halt it.

Alexander complained instantly and seemed to be fine seconds after he got to his feet. In the locker room after the bout, he said he'd been hit harder many times.

"Just give me a chance," Alexander said. "I've been hit hard a lot of times in my life. I was OK. No excuses. I'm a professional. I got caught with a shot, but that's what this is about. But I definitely felt I could go on."

This marked the third consecutive bizarre finish to an Irvin fight. The Northern California-based light heavyweight won by disqualification over Luis Cane after getting kneed in the head while on the ground at UFC 79 in December, which was the first DQ in a UFc match since 2003; and a freak leg injury brought a halt to his UFC 71 loss to Thiago Silva last May.

"That's the story of my life," said Irvin. "I just told people I hoped it would be a good fight. Even in my interviews, I told people I didn't want a quick knockout. ... I've knocked people out in three or four of my fights, but it's all been by one shot. But at least I got this win and I can go back and train harder and hopefully get something against some of the big names."

I would have rather watched them go to the parking lot like they had offered. For all the hype behind the fight I was disapointed in the fight.

wow, i'm very surprised. his popularity may have gone to his nugget which takes away the fright and nervous energy to fight harder. that's why no one should ever underestimate anyone. ever...

I missed the opener...but after just watching the Thiago-Karo fight plus a pile of other matches with Mazagatti as the ref, it's very obvious the guy is totally inconsistent with his matches.
In several of the Ultimate Fighter matches last season, he'd give 2-4 warnings (after multiple punches) in a 2 round fight about punches to back of head with no point deductions. In the Lesnar match 60 days ago...2 punches to back of Mir's head (one which was because Mir was smart enough to move his head in that direction)....Lesnar loses a point.
Now 2....quick ends tonight with same guy as referee............JOKE! Fire the guy & investigate him for taking payments....guarantee there's something to it!

EZ4U2 say the ref shouldn't have stopped the fight. Easy for Alexander to say he was ready to go on. #17 has it right, he would have got blasted 10 more times. You don't want these guys to get any more brain damage than they already have. One thing I like about UFC is that most of the fighters have some education and a brain in their heads. You remember what happened to Muhammad Ali after his fights with Joe Frazier? Ali used to be as quick with his head as he was with his hands, but you take countless full-on shots from a 200+ pounder and your brain turns to sponge. I think the ref did the right thing.

I trying so hard to agree and not be mad at the Ref stoppage, but after seeing the stops Maz did to the Alexander/Irvin fight and the Alves/Karo fight, which I think both were a TAD bit early. I tend to agree you don't want someone seriously hurt. But if those fights deserved to be stopped early then WHY WASN'T the Florian/Lauzon fight stopped EARLIER? Am I the only one that went to the bathroom with Florian on top and grabbed a beer then came back to Florian still on top, STILL just punching away? I know they weren't clean punches but he was done. Maz is WAY too inconsistant. I still think Alexander and Karo would not have been able to recover, but why not give it another 3-5 seconds and see what happens? I am dissapointed in the way the ref handled both matches. Something needs to be done.

i like houston, but he got caught no doubt about it, he got dropped, if he was still concious why the (profane) did he lay back with his arms stretched out. parysian was a little less obvious, but still he got folded in half then hit flush several times, in this stage of the game if you get dropped you gotta do somthin quick...otherwise it's over.

i think steve maz, herb dean are the worst ref in the ufc right now.... steve maz worst call was when he stopped brock from pounding mir which i think he must give a verbal warning first before stepping in... thats one of the worst stoppage and herb dean's halt to tito and ken 2nd fight

Now i saw both fights i think it was a justified stoppage.... houston is turning to be a fluke...one punch hit magic man, while karo's wanting a title shot? think twice fight jon fitch first then ask for a title shot or rematch diego sanchez or fight matt hughes (delivered the best mma april fools day joke "fighting SHOGUN")

I'm just glad this happened to alexander. Look, he's got his own yahoo feature without any real accomplishments. His only big win was against Jardine, but that suddenly makes him the baddets dude around? The Thiago Silva fight was one of the most pathetic showings I've ever seen, but still Alexanders popular and hyped up. Then James Irvin, a guy whos been destroyed by heavyweights who would never make it in the ufc today knocks him out in 8 seconds and STILL, of all the exciting fights on the card, STILL hes the only one they bring up. I mean if hes going to complain that Mazzagatti didnt let Irvin beat his unconcious body thats shameful man.

Mazzagatti is a joke. He ruined the night by stopping 2 fights for no reason. As we saw in the Florian fight, Dean let them fight it out. If that was Maz in there, it would have been over much sooner. I am pretty appalled by the outcome of some of these fights. UFC should be ashamed. Thank God this wasn't a PPV.

I get so tired of people claiming Steve Mazzagatti stops his fights too early. Did you not see Houston and Karo crumple to the canvas in a heap?! It is the refs responsibility to stop the fight if a fighter can not intelligently defend himself. In both cases, especially the Houston Alexander fight, the fighters could have been seriously injured had the fight continued. I mean seriously, do you think the Jackson-Liddell fight was stopped premature too!? Regarding the Lesnar-Mir match, it has been documented that Mazzagatti did in fact verbally warn Lesnar about the blow to the back of the head and Lesnar proceeded to land several more anyway. The crowd was so loud in the arena that it was difficult to hear him give the warning during the broadcast. The one point deduction was entirely justifiable.
