Davis too saavy on the feet for Lytle

It was billed as an animalistic slugfest. That's what Chris Lytle wanted but Marcus Davis was too smart to simply stand and wing punches with the Indiana firefighter. Lytle followed Davis around the cage for 15 minutes throwing wild haymakers but "The Irish Hand-Grenade" effectively countered with short strikes. Neither fighter appeared to get severely stunned at any point during the fight. The judges gave Davis a split decision (29-28, 29-28, 28-29) win over "Lights Out."

Davis used the superior foot movement, that he learned from years as a pro boxer, to avoid many of those big shots. He also did major damage with the left body kick. The kicks consistently landed on Lytle's right rib cage. By the end of the first round, Lytle's side was all marked up. He looked really worn down by the start of the third round.

This one played out exactly as Cage Writer predicted in our UFC 93 picks piece. Lytle would've had a better shot at the victory if he had mixed in some takedown attempts. Because of his submission experience, he has a slight edge on the ground over Davis. The threat of going to the mat would've at least taken Davis out of his comfort zone.

Lytle (26-17-5, 5-9 UFC) almost always puts on a great show but his approach doesn't necessarily lead to wins. Although the counter-argument could be that his approach has gotten him 14 paydays with the UFC and several Fight of the Night bonuses. Davis has now won 14-of-15 fights and is 8-2 the UFC. He should get another shot at another top 10 UFC welterweight in his next go-around, maybe someone like Karo Parisyan. Davis lost his first big step up against Mike Swick.

Folks knocked Davis down for being a bleeder, from what I see he can still get it done in good fashion

all the hype for the davis/lytle fight made it weak. could've been strategy by davis to try and keep the black belt from taking it to the ground.....davis knew his hands were better, but you could see he didn't want any of lytle's power. good fight though if you manage to forget all the hype.

This fight reminded me of a girl back in high school, she talked all week about what she was going to do to me that weekend. But when the time came she didnt live up to her promises.

Yep fight of the year or was it fight of the century, I would say it was bit hyped.
There were flashes of good toe to toe action but far from the Forrest Griffin vs. Stephan Bonnar battle.

This card didn't have a whole lot that would've impressed me. Not necessarily how the UFC should've started off the year, however congrats to Marcus Davis. I can't really tell you why, but he has become one of my favorite fighters. He seems to always put on a decent show. When he fought in England a couple months ago he asked Dana White to be a part of this event in Ireland. Chris Lytle made the offer and the match was made. Good to see that both of these guys made the most of this opportunity. Too bad it sounds like Rua didn't.

it could've been so much better without all that hype and "gentleman's agreement" bullsh!t......would've been nice to see the possibility of some ground scrambles too, it is mma right?
and now that i've had the time to think about it, i blame lytle's corner. they were telling him nothing to change his approach and he kept coming up short. delagrotte was giving marcus great advice and having him do the right things to win the fight. if lytle had fought a smarter fight, he could've had the win. but congrats to davis for getting in his head.

Looked to me like Davis lost the fight. I would give "ring generalship" points to Davis, but effective aggression points to Lytle. As far as effective striking, Lytle once had Davis backed against the cage, pounding him, and Davis had no answer except the Monte Python "Holy Grail" defense: "RUN AWAY!!!!"
Turned tail and vamoosed. Lytle looked bigger and more powerful, but Davis landed those kicks to somewhat nullify Lytle's charge. But Lytle seemed to have made Davis "uncomfortable" standing and striking with him, more than once. Davis never had Lytle worried or hurt. Maybe a bit off-balance" chasing him, though.
I like Davis, and I like Lytle too. I had it 29-28 Lytle.

There is no way I'd pay for this card. It's decent but nothing to shell out cash for. The main event had an aging ex-Pride star and an ex-champ who seems to lost his passion for beating the hell out of others. Even Rua's fight disappointed. It'll be fine when shown on Spike. But I can't wait for GSP/Penn 2 - that should be a hella fight if Penn's in shape like he has been lately. What weight are they fighting at? Is Penn moving up to fight GSP?

Just like the fight matt serra lytle can't get a break. Maybe Indiana needs 2 sell more pay per views. Lytle is the toughest vet in the ufc. Intergrated Fighting is Indys only real fight team!!!!!

Ye i like marcus davis.....the man wears his heart on his sleeve. Great fight. Pure tactical and exciting. Fight of the night on a crap card! Cna someone tell me how the shogun-coleman fight also got fight of the night? Its baffling! Maybe its because coleman needs the money or its his swansong cheque. Its baffling!

Horrible card, should have been on Spike with UFC 93 on ppv in 2 weeks, putting 2 shows on PPV in the same month is greedy.

I'd like to see Davis take on Jash Koscheck. I think the difference in styles would be really interesting to watch. Koscheck, the young great wrestler with powerful striking, against Davis, the seasoned boxer whose jiu-jitsu is light years away from when he first started, proving he can submit guys like in the Paul Taylor fight. Both are coming off wins, both are still looking to really crack into the title hunt...I think it would be a good main card fight.

Davis RAN that whole fight and still won the decision, Pathetic! Seriously, there were several times during the first 2 rounds that Davis actually turned and ran from Lytle. It was obvious to me [and apparently to Davis as well] from their very first exchange that Davis couldn't bang toe-to-toe with Lytle. Davis landed a few decent kicks to the body, that's it. Lytle landed all of the best punches and controlled the ring for the vast majority of the fight.

Davis and Thiago fought back a few years ago and Thiago took a split decision. This however was not in the UFC. Both fighters have vastly improved since a couple years back but Thiago in my opinion should be fighting at 185. The dude is the biggest 170 I have ever seen. Woops! Thats right Thiago didnt make weight in the fight against Matt Hughes and I just question if he is meant to be fighting WW. Dont get me wrong, the guy is a top WW but needs to prove he can make the weight in the next couple fights. However this as good a matchup as any I see for Davis in the near future especially in his quest to try climbing the WW ranks for a shot at the title

Davis is confused; he thinks he's a boxer, or possibly a kick-boxer. He doesn't fight MMA. Lytle was a dope for letting himself get suckered into this "gentleman's agreement" to keep it standing.
Davis has no ground game, and someone like Koschek would destroy him. (For the record, I'm no Kos fan -- just callin' it like i see it.)
