Patrick Cote's chance to pull off a huge upset went up in smoke a few minutes prior to his crumpling to the mat early in the third round against Anderson Silva. 'The Predator' said he felt the right knee pop when he delivered a kick in the previous round. Between rounds, he told his trainer Mark Dellagrotte that he couldn't kick anymore.

Cote looked depressed when he first entered the room at the UFC 90 post-fight press conference but actually sounded pretty happy that he survived as long as he did against the dangerous Silva.

On the issue of Silva potentially disrespecting Cote with some of his antics, the French-Canadian was unphased:

"He had a gameplan, that's why he was like that. He was worried about the power in my hands. He was a little bit conservative. He was waiting for a good opportunity."

Click below to hear all of Cote's post-fight comments:

Cote was told that the early diagnosis was a torn meniscus not an ACL or MCL. He trailed 20-18 on two scorecards and was even 19-19 on the other starting the third round.

This group of self-proclaimed experts is really a bunch of journalism majors looking to write about sports they know nothing about. Sure you can name a move or two, just football fans know what a hike or a pass is. But, that's it. You've never been hit or kicked and you don't know what it means to think on your feet in the middle of an all out battle.
You also miss the angle of the fighters being told not to engage until round 3. Why? If you get into the investigative side of betting you'll see how this has tainted all sports.
    They had to delay.
Hype is made to sell to the easy influenced.
It works extremely well in America.
And it masks the Gumba's betting on the outcome.

Steve Cofield, you should try to blog on Football or something....here's a quote for you:
"He had a gameplan, that's why he was like that. He was worried about the power in my hands. He was a little bit conservative. He was waiting for a good opportunity." - Patrick Cote
He wasn't clowning around, he was baiting Cote. How does a stupid headline like this make it in the front page of Yahoo?

dan wetzel is an idiot calling this fight a joke and that silva needs a challenge. wake up, buddy; cote, rich franklin (x2), dan henderson, nate marquart, chris leben and even travis lutter are incredibly dangerous fighters. we were witnesses to a classic chess match last night instead of the knock down brawl the uneducated masses have come to adore. had cote's knee not given out, i'm certain us fight purists would've remembered this one as an all-time classic...

hmmmm so who do you think was right after watching the fights??? ANDERSON SILVA IS TRYING TO LOSE ON PURPOSE TO LEAVE AND GO TO DREAM. GET IT IN YOUR HEADS. THERE IS NO COMPETITION FOR HIM IN THE UFC. EVEN WHEN HE TRIES TO LOSE, THESE CHUMPS CAN'T BEAT HIM. he needs real competition and that is only in DREAM with Jacare, Mousasi, Kang, and Zelg. These UFC chumps suck. Wake up all you self proclaimed UFC fans.....HE'S TRYING TO LOSE ON PURPOSE AND GET OUT OF HIS UFC CONTRACT

I agree with Harmon S. Silva and Cote were probably told to make it last. But, more than that, Silva respected Cote's ability to take hits and keep going. Didn't you see Cote take the kick then the knee to the jaw? It didn't even phase him. He just kept going. And until you've experienced a knee to the jaw, you have no idea how awesome Cote's skills are. Also, you could see the power in Silva's hits and kicks. When he decided to attack, he didn't hold back. So, please...if you don't have any fighting experience, or been in the cage with some one you highly respect, don't make calls about how good fighters are. I personally have been in the cage using MMA, and in the ring using Kickboxing, Bok Fu, and Jiu Jitsu. I know what it takes to win a match, and its not always a blood match. Sometimes, its a lot of circling, looking for the golden opportunity when your opponent lets his guard down. That's when you strike hard and fast. And that's what was happening last night.

Phil, do us all a favor. Go watch your boxing, and stay away from the MMA columns. You are clueless. If these guys couldn't fight their way out of a wet paper bag, then why aren't you in the ring winning some money instead of talking s__t from your lazyboy? I'd thoroughly enjoy watching you get knocked out in the first ten seconds.

jtakeo11, you must be on some kind of ritualistic hallucinogenic drugs if you think silva is trying to lose on purpose to go to dream!!! judging by your name you might be a little bias takeo-san...if i was japanese i'd want to see the best fighter in the world come to my organization as well, in hopes that the reincarnated version of pride wouldn't fall victim once again to the yakuza. dream has some very good fighters, but they are all much the junior to anderson. and silva has already played the japan card and where did it get him? oh yeah, he left japan and became a legend...so why should he leave again?

First, the UFC was embassed by 2 of their employees last night. Cote and Silva are employess of UFC and need to be seriously disciplined like any other organization would do if their employees performed like they did last night. Whether the reprimand is behind closed doors or in full view of others, so that other fighters can see that acts like this won't be tolerated, something needs to be done.
Finally, the sport is teetering on the brink of being a circus act again. The UFC has done a lot to erase the circus like images of the past, but last night was a 3-ring circus all over again. Elite XC has done damages that cannot be overcome for a long time. If the UFC has showing like last night's again, the sport will go the way of Heavyweight boxing.

and really, chili dog, if that is your real name
you didn't even offer up any argument, you just say they should be embarassed or disciplined or whatever.....for what? they're two fighters that had a slow (but exciting if you know what you're watching) start to what was supposed to be a 5-round fight!
i could sit here and criticize 4 out of every 5 of B.Hop's wins for pretty much the same reasons people are criticizing this fight. but i'm not gonna do that because i know hopkins' style and he does it well and even though plenty of ignorant boxing fans call his fights boring someone who really knows the sport sees it as beautiful.
same goes for last night, while all the meatheads tuned in to see the same thing they saw when silva fought james irvin (which was free btw, so meatheads were a plenty), the rest of us educated fans were sitting on the edge of our seats in silence watching two very dangerous fighters who each have a world of respect for eachother go at it.

cote is a joke. silva was scared of his hands and thats why he fought like that. it was more boredom then anything else. he offered to pick him up at the end of the round as a slap in the face. what did cote do to ever worry silva? oh and a judge that gave cote a round should never judge another fight. it was an unfortunate ending but either way cote offered no challenge. also writes and bloggers who talk about the ufc getting silva a challenge should remember that silva is the best fighter in the world has fought the best and crushed them. i wish these writers would have to be able to do ten push ups in order to question the athletic abilities and motives of the most elite fighters in the world.

i felt really bad for patrick cote. i do agree that anderson silva began to get nervous after hitting cote with a couple of punch/kick combos, and it did not affect cote. cote actually smiled and motioned for him to bring some more. joe rogan stated that silva told his translator, just after the weigh-in and standoff, that "this kid isn't scared of me?!!!" silva was worried about being beat by an unranked opponent at that point.

Stick to basics. Silva should have walked out and annilated Cote in the first round. Cote is a joke. Silva should have killed him viciously. White and fans have every reason to be pissed. It was not strategy or anything else. It was a joke. Silva needs to be punished by way of having GSP or an awesome light heavy weight give him a real, seriuous fight. Cote is from the gutter. If you do not understand this, you do not understand MMA fighting. I suggest that those who think Cote has skills rent all of the UFC fights. Watch, learn, and study the art. Learn the different martial arts, how they work, and what makes a figher excellent. Cote has nothing. He is chump change.

I don't think he was toying with or being disrespectful to cote... I think Silva underestimated Cote's toughness (not the end result, just his opponent's toughness), and was surprised that he was unable to knock him out (with the same knee strike that put down Franklin, among others), thus Silva had to stall and change his gameplan... that happens sometimes. Which explains why Silva looked diff. sat. night... he was thrown off his game. Plus- Silva is a counter-striker. If anything against Cote, I was a little disappointed at his lack of usual aggressiveness- maybe he was intimidated... can u blame him? but I also think he deserves a rematch, as he is Silva's only UFC opponent so far to expose a weakness in him. Throw him off his gameplan, maybe u'll have a chance...
