You're fight isn't with mixed martial arts! How many times can we scream this at the folks who run boxing? Fix things internally, steal the positive ideas from MMA and your sport will be back on the upswing. Makes sense, right? If so, why, on a night when over 20,000 packed the Staples Center for a big boxing match, was HBO's Larry Merchant uttering some nonsense about a huge payoff Golden Boy Promotions accepted to have Oscar De La Hoya attend the Affliction MMA card down the road in Anaheim?

Merchant put forth this theory on why DLH wasn't at Staples watching his business partner Shane Mosley beat Antonio Margarito:

"A celebrity who is here in bronze only [referring to a bronze statue of Oscar De La Hoya that stands outside the Staples Center]. Oscar De La Hoya, the live version, is in nearby Anaheim, where his company got a $5 million fee from a t-shirt maker so that he would be personally involved the promotion of a mixed martial arts show. It would take that much, Jim, to get me to go to one of those things."

The notion of paying De La Hoya more than the entire Affliction 2 fighter payroll to attend the event and appear during the post-fight is so preposterous only someone with blinders on would present it as fact. It sounds like someone fed Merchant a bogus line and he let this stupid hatred of MMA that is so pervasive amongst "boxing people" cloud his judgement.

Read Merchant's statement closely -- "His company got a fee from a t-shirt maker so that he would be personally involved in the PROMOTION of a mixed martial arts show."

Even if you believe the payoff happened, did De La Hoya actually do anything to promote the Affliction 2 show and sell pay-per-views? He watched the event in person and attended two pre-fight press conferences during the week. If you were going to pay Golden Boy (a partner with Affliction) a huge sum, wouldn't you have him do a ton of radio and television interviews before the event? What value is there in having DLH on camera watching the card?

We couldn't find any boxing media members who thought that this payoff seemed feasible. Most thought that De La Hoya simply found a convenient way to avoid the loud boos that were sure to come from the Margarito fans at Staples. A prominent Latino MMA fighter told Cage Writer that De La Hoya has lost a lot of his Mexican-American fans because he quit on the stool last month against Manny Pacquiao. He went on to say that Latino fans expect Mexican boxers to be warriors and De La Hoya would've have garnered more respect had he been knocked out. By tending to his MMA interests De La Hoya also avoided addressing his fighting future with the assembled boxing media up the road.

Is it also so unbelievable that De La Hoya might actually be interested in getting more heavily involved in the promotion of MMA and wanted to see what the Affliction event, and more importantly, the Fedor Emelianenko-business is all about?

I'm surprised merchant used the term mixed martial arts and not "ultimate fighting".

I heard De La Hoya is promting not only iron-on t-shirts from back in the 70-80's, but lick'em & stick'em tattoos. If you buy both, he gives you a cut-out cardboard box where you can cut out a champion belt to wear. That will be the closedt he comes to it ever again.

Hey PopSharts, whats you fragging problem with De La Hoya? He is doing a lot for mma by backing Affliction. Just by attaching the Golden Boy name to the event alone is a huge step for mixed martial arts. Either you are one of those boxing fans that are too stupid to realize that mma is the future or you have some personal problem with De La Hoya. Which is it?

I have watched this sport evolve for the last 15 years and have wrestling, boxing, martial arts background. What have you done? Watch a couple PPV's, pick a couple fights with your younger sister, and think you know MMA. Go grab a Playgirl and your love lotion.

    whats up real mma fans?
    grea weekend for mma !
i was out Atlantic City Friday dapping up Frankie Edgar and Wilson Reis
and saying whats up to Robbie Lawler, also got to see Tara La Rossa TKO someone due to a cut
Saturday's Affliction card was Great !
Fedor is King, and the rest of the fights were good
UFC might have to start watching out cuz Affliction has a lot of supporter (Golden Boy, Trump)
and could start to steal some competition due to pay
And WEC was pretty good last nite too, Varner vs Cerrone, Faber, and Aldo were all impressive

HAHA you're a complete joke. Affliction won't last long enough to steal any of the UFC's thunder because they PAY way too much for the talent. Most of the talent that Affliction has on it's roster are throw-aways from the UFC. The major thing that I dislike about Affliction is the fact that they use a standard boxing ring for a MMA fight. The Octagon is much better suited for MMA. I will not support anything with "The Donald" and "The Crossdresser" De La Hoya, they are a bunch of bums that only care about one thing, $$$$$!

    Ur jus bitter man
    and im a joke?
the cage limits some of the fighting i.e. wrestlers throwing peoples back against cage
jus tho get them to the ground and pound them
what it does do (the cage) is force more stand up due to limited space which is good
i personally dont have a problem with either and i like the mix of both
and for u to think that the ufc fighters arent noticing those good pay days is just dumb
so i guess a fighter would rather stay in UFC for the pride, and not make more $ else where
and do u think Dana doesnt just care about making $ either? Its a business and the more Affliction shows
the more fighters will get interested, and P.S. get off UFC nutz

    whats up nutcracker?
thanks for being logical and notcing that this is a $ business (mma/boxing)
that was a good win for Sugar Shane, im surprised he handled Margarito like that !
and i woukldnt surprise me if Affliction did pay DLH for his Promotion in whole
not just to show up, but for name recogniton
people keep saying what u want, but if Affliction keeps putting on shows
they will get some attention, and they have major players like Golden Boy and Trump in there corner
My friend made a good point last nite, why do u think dana is sucking all the $ he can?
cuz he knows one day mma is going to be bigger then the just the UFC, take what u can get

HAHA, I'm all for the expansion of MMA, just not at the hands of Donald Trump and DLH. When Afflictions payroll is what it is and they can't even sellout the arena they're in, that's bad $$$$$. Even an idiot like you can understand the economics of the situation. How many PPVs do you think Affliction sold on Saturday night? Maybe 100K and that's being nice? That's $4 million, plus maybe a live gate of a generous $2 million. $6 million total, the disclosed payroll was somewhere a little over $3 million. And we both know the reported 300K that FEDOR received is not correct, more like $2 million himself (especially if Arlovski made $1.5 million). They can't stay in business with those numbers! Who knows maybe the t-shirt guy can save his promotion with his t-shirt money

he def could save it with T-shirt money
and then pair that up with Trump and Golden Boy Money
u have a force to be reconned with
and u say u dont wanna see DLH and Trump dip their hands in MMA
but u rather see Dana stay filthy rich while fighters like Frankie Edgar
are lucky to come out with 20k for figthing on a ppv
get pass your bias and recognize that affliction put on a great card
with a most dominate fighter regardless on who was putting it on or sitting the stands
the fact that u keep calling me a "Joke " and "idiot" HAHA shows that ur just a rimjob
once again look at u avatar CLOWN HAHA is that ur seductive swimsuit pose in the dirt GUMP?
