Dana White today confirmed rumors that UFC would be running a live Spike TV special July 19, head-to-head with the debut of the Affliction company's pay-per-view debut, and announced the hook would be middleweight champion Anderson Silva moving up to light heavyweight to face James Irvin in the main event of a show at The Palms in Las Vegas.

Silva, 21-4, ranked by Yahoo! Sports as the No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter in the world, will not be vacating his middleweight title. At this point the plan is for Silva to use this as a test as a light heavyweight but still defend the middleweight title later in the year.

If all goes right, this could set up Silva to face the likes of Chuck Liddell in what has potential to among the biggest money fights in MMA history.

"I love this guy," said White about Silva. "He'll fight anyone.  He wants to fight six times a year.  It makes my job harder but I love it. It's the Titos (Ortiz) of the world that ruined the fight game. This guy and Chuck Liddell don't care, they'll fight whoever you put in front of them."

Irvin, 14-4, is primarily a stand-up fighter, who is coming off an eight-second knockout win over Houston Alexander on April 2 in Broomfield, Colo., among the quickest in company history.

The semifinal will feature the return to UFC of Hermes Franca, 18-6, against Frankie Edgar, 8-1. Franca had asked to be released from his UFC contract after testing positive for steroids in a July 7 lightweight title challenge against Sean Sherk. But he recently inked a new deal to return after the completion of his one-year suspension. Franca vs. Edgar had been tentatively scheduled for the Aug. 9, event in Minneapolis.

Wednesday will be a major day for the company as at noon Pacific time, White is going to make the much-talked about major announcement to his staff. He conceded that a lot of fans will think it's a disappointment, but in his view, it's huge, comparing it to the announcement of the Bud Lite sponsorship deal earlier this year, which he thinks as a corporate partner was gigantic but it was not a major story within the MMA world.

It is also the final episode of the season of Ultimate Fighter, which apparently features the craziest season ending in the show's history and will determine the key match on a Saturday night live Spike TV special.

"Within five-to-eight years, this will be the biggest sport in the world," White said. "It will be bigger than the NFL and bigger than World Cup soccer."

Affliction, the latest challenger to UFC, is putting one of the most costly undertakings of any UFC rival with a pay-per-view event July 19 from the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif.

The card features Fedor Emelianenko, generally conceded as the best heavyweight in MMA history, facing what would be his toughest test in nearly three years against former UFC champion Tim Sylvia.  The show features several other former UFC heavyweight stars with Josh Barnett, a former champion, facing Pedro Rizzo, and Andrei Arlovski, another former champion, facing for International Fight League heavyweight standout Ben Rothwell.

White also confirmed Liddell vs. Rashad Evans as the headliner for the company's Sept. 6 show, a debut at Phillips Arena in Atlanta.

Can you say tivo (Silva/Irvin fight)... what’s the point UFC. Affliction has what UFC doesn’t a solid heavyweight division. Once Randy gets done with his legal issue Affliction will complete with the UFC.

This won't affect all nine people who were going to watch Affliction. They'll just tivo the Silva fight and watch it when they get back to their mommy's basements.

I'm stoked about that but honestly Dana is a little rat for getting everyone excited about tomorrows announcement and then today he said it will disappoint a lot of fans, then why did he say it was going to blow everyones mind a week ago?

Dana's actually scared of the Affliction PPV. I love Anderson Silva, but I'll TiVo it, he should be able to take of the tomato can he's been given. Dana's been doing his best Vince McMahon impression for years, UFC fans won't admit to it, but it's there.

Anderson silva... so what. i saw him sparring an amatuer open class golden gloves boxer and anderson got worked. how can you say this guy is a great fighter when he cant even handle a 165 pound 19 year old amatuer.?? all you ufc buttsuckers are impaired. dana white is all about separating you from your money. he doesnt care about anything else. he is no different than any other promoter. mma will split up and get watered down same as boxing did.. and with a few more freebies like the one with slice and the sport will stay marginal at best.

No matter what this is good for the fans...Two great shows in one day...you can't beat that with a stick. I love the UFC but I love MMA in general... I'll pay to watch Fedor, Arlovski, Barnett, Pedro, Lindland and if it means that I have to put up with Tm "The king of decesions" Sylvia then so be it! I'll watch that first then I'll watch the greatest striker of all time Anderson Silva...minus the 5 minute commercials! Thank the lord for tivo!

are you kiddding me?? this guy is out of control. with all the rival organizations popping up it will be lucky to survive period. it is getting watered down already and the general public wants to see someone tap out as much as americans would want to watch a cricket match... dana white is promoting about as well as he did as a boxer.. what a tool...

TOMORROW'S ANNOUNCEMENT = WEC fighters will be allowed to Fight UFC fighters on WEC events? When is THAT going to happen?
Basically you have the UFC and the WEC. Im sorry, Affliction/EliteXC... I would NEVER spend a dime watching those junk fights. Heck, I barely even remember to Tivo them when they are free on TV.
Merge the UFC and WEC and let's get it on!!!

Affliction executives must be in tears. I'll watch Anderson over Fedor any day, and when Anderson is free it's not even a contest. Plus he's moving up in weight! James Irvin should get an honorary belt for taking this fight.

I just don't buy into the Silva hype machine. If GSP, the true number one lb for lb fighter in the world, was fighting that day, then I'd care. Why should I care about Silva, the supposed best lb for lb fighter in the world, putting on some weight and crushing some guy I couldn't pick out of a police lineup? The Affliction card at least intrigues me. I don't care if the company has long term staying power at this point, I just want to see how their production quality is, and I want to see these guys fight.

This move by Dana is as McMahon-esque as could be. Vince did this often in the 80's, running ppv's opposite NWA's major televised shows and huge tv shows opposite NWA ppv's. If I'm not mistaken, the first Clash of the Champions and the first ppv Starrcade would be two examples of this.

A lot of you are just a bunch of tools. Don't get me wrong, the UFC is great. They're the whole reason MMA is what it is and they desreve a ton of credit. But that doesn't mean they are without criticism. Seriously, Fedor, Arlovski, Lindland, these guys are great fighters. And say what you UFC butt kissers want, but Tim Silvia was your champ for how long and how many times? Anderson Silva is awesome and I'll watch any fight he's in but why go up against Affliction on July 19? Dana White is NOT interested in furthering MMA, he's only interested in making the UFC synoumus with MMA. He wants to crush any and all competition. Why not have other promotions. It further the sport and it's better for the fighters. There are 1000's of MMA fighters in this world, the UFC has only 200 fighters under contract. Why should Dana White care if we want to see some of the fighters not under contract to him fight? Like I said, I think the UFC is great and I buy thier PPV's all the time, but seriously, stop being tools. They're great fighters and interesting match-ups outside the UFC. No reason for Dana White to try and stop MMA from being furthered by another promotion. This insn't pro wrestling and he's not Vince McMahon. Stop trying to take over the world Dana.

About time Dana did something to try and stop the bleeding in the ufc I would much rather see Silva fight for free than pay to see a crapy affliction card with one good fighter and abunch of washed up fat old men, all fun aside If Dana really wants to make the sport huge they should be working together to show the world the best fights with the best fighters. Bring Fedor to the UFC and give Coture what he wants and lets see them fight

Heavywieghts are the most boaring fighters to watch... UFC should get rid of the division and replace it with the 145lbs... Get rid of all the heavywieghts and let them go to Affliction...

many of you guys are clowns. i usually dont write anything, but i had to. the affliction card is a great one. the fighters are top notch. anyone that enjoys MMA would take the opportunity to watch it if they can. i wanted to go to it, but unfortunately i have to attend a wedding.
i train. i have friends that are pros and fight in smaller organizations. the best fighters do not automatically fight in the UFC. there is a world of MMA out there. get educated.
i have been privileged enough to go see UFC40,60, and 76, K-1 Dynamite! USA, Pride 32 and 33, WFA King of the Streets, and smaller shows. take the opportunity to be an MMA fan, not just a UFC fan.
for anyone that wants to discredit anything pro-affliction. remember, if it wasnt for affliction, there would be NO MMA to watch july 19th. UFC wouldnt have bothered putting on a card. for those that think UFC/Dana did it for the fans. he actually did it to secure more of your money. it is a smart business move to take away ppv $ and attention from affliction. it is slimy, but smart. by other companies upping the ante producing great cards, the UFC will have to follow. this is good for all of us, the fans and the fighters.

You're all looking at this from a Fan's view and calling Dana White all kinds of names, but you need to look at it from a business stand point. Businesses do this all the time. They try to counter the competition whenever they have something new or hot. From a business stand point, Dana is a genius. From a fan's perspective, this is good. More fighting to watch.
And besides, Fedor is the most overrated fighter out there.
