Anderson Silva is saying that he is going to retire:
"I'll retire next year, I already gave my all. I don't need to prove anything for anyone and within one year I'll put my gloves aside."
To say that I'm shocked is an understatement. Silva currently sits atop the Yahoo! Sports pound-for-pound rankings, and is one of the best fighters in MMA's short history. His well-rounded game has forced other fighters to advance their technique to merely attempt to compete with him. His retirement, if he actually follows through, would leave a definite hole in the sport.
So what does that mean for the year? Are his next fights going to be the Anderson Silva farewell tour? His next fight is against Patrick Cote at UFC 90 on October 25 in Chicago. If he is serious about retiring, Silva could make it official there.
He has talked in the past about getting in the boxing ring and could bring a cadre of fans with him. Though he has been a UFC company man, doing whatever Dana White asked of him, Silva's possible entry into the ranks of the sweet science could be a dream-come-true for the Affliction/Golden Boy partnership. Of course, he could also truly put his gloves aside, sit back, relax and enjoy some golf. I hear that's what other retired athletes like to do.

second PROPS TO MAGGIE again... I'm feelin' your articles way more than Cofields... but since my homie unwrecked always jumps on him I'll leave it alone and just give you your props LOL...
now on to Anderson leaving... my first reaction is that this is some kind of ploy for publicity or something... but let's take the view that he's really serious about leaving. Not sure how old he is, but I don't think Anderson is 30 yet. Sometimes I think this happens w/ guys who do very well very early in their lives (remember BJ after beating Matt Hughes at 21 walked away from the UFC) and then they kind of get bored and feel like they have nothing left to prove. As Americans I think we all pretty much think the same thing: get the money. But there are two mitigating factors here 1) there isn't that much money in MMA to make you stay like in boxing where the de La hoya's and Tyson's of the world can get 8 figures just to show up. And many more can get 7 figures just to show up. and 2) Anderson is from Brazil.. as someone who has traveled I know that materialism doesn't mean as much in other countries besides the fact that Anderson probably already has enough money to retire in Brazil and live well. So think about it fellas.. if you weren't 30 and your life was pretty much already set you were considered by most people who care to be the best at what you do, would you still be fighting or would you retire to a nice beach in Brazil and stay in shape by chasing girls LOL?
As for him going into boxing I tend to agree that I've seen nothing of his boxing skills that would lead me to believe that he can compete w/ top tier boxers. Chad Dawson, Joe Calzaghe, Tarver, Pavlik, Winky all these guys would give Anderson fits as far as I can see.

Now for the actual blog disccussion. Man if Anderson retires that just makes for more money a yr or two from now. This is just like mayweather. Retire the best and people call you out because in the eyes of the people you are not the champion until you beat the champion. Its like Rocky 4 and 5. It just like Sugar Ray Leonard did. He retire the best when Hagler and those guys became champ the reporters would always ask them about Ray. Just like Randy Couture. When he was out the game No heavyweight couldn't go without answering questions about him. Silva is geeting bored and when you get bored you get sloppy and knocked out. If he is bored retire. Until somebody gives you that itch.

One would have to be GSP at middleweight. You could say he hasn't cleared out middleweight until he beats Paulo Filho. Then maybe a couple of the top LHW, but who is that, really? Wanderlei?...Shogun?...Rampage? Not Forrest or Rashad.
It's probably a reach to stick him in against a marquee heavyweight except for Couture, who fought at 205 recently.
