Anderson Silva pondering retirement?

Anderson Silva is saying that he is going to retire:

"I'll retire next year, I already gave my all. I don't need to prove anything for anyone and within one year I'll put my gloves aside."

To say that I'm shocked is an understatement. Silva currently sits atop the Yahoo! Sports pound-for-pound rankings, and is one of the best fighters in MMA's short history. His well-rounded game has forced other fighters to advance their technique to merely attempt to compete with him. His retirement, if he actually follows through, would leave a definite hole in the sport.

So what does that mean for the year? Are his next fights going to be the Anderson Silva farewell tour? His next fight is against Patrick Cote at UFC 90 on October 25 in Chicago. If he is serious about retiring, Silva could make it official there.

He has talked in the past about getting in the boxing ring and could bring a cadre of fans with him. Though he has been a UFC company man, doing whatever Dana White asked of him, Silva's possible entry into the ranks of the sweet science could be a dream-come-true for the Affliction/Golden Boy partnership. Of course, he could also truly put his gloves aside, sit back, relax and enjoy some golf. I hear that's what other retired athletes like to do.

If Silva jumps ship to Boxing he'd be an idiot - that sport is boring and off life support.

I'm sure his retirement will be short lived. Within 2 years he'll sign with Affliction and Fedor will cut some weight and they'll fight at 205 for the biggest fight in MMA history.

Anderson is on top of the world, why would he retire now? Maybe its because he wants to go out on top before Dana puts him up against the tough competition in the LHW division. I guess going through guys like Jackson, Griffin, Liddell, Rua and Wanderlei doesn't appeal to him. This is bad news for the UFC and its fans because there were alot of great matchups for him in the LHW division.

Retire for what??? He still has to fight those who remain skillful, yet haven't had a chance to engage with him at Middleweight. The same for Light heavey Weaight, or was he just teasing the MMA observers. I think he should retire when there is REALLY ANYONE ELSE TO FIGHT IN THE MIDDLE AND LIGHT HEAVY WEIGHT CLASSES!! Could it be that there's another contract outsie of UFC waiting for him of some sort that's why he 's in a hurry?

He can retire just 2 let someone else shine & get every1 on there nutts(Like Liddell), then he will come back make more money & destroy any 185 pound fighter the match him up with.

I don't think he can fight somewhere else if he retires as champion. I know he can't fight MMA somewhere else, but not sure about boxing. Seems pretty dumb to become the top mixed martial artist in the world and then retire into boxing. He should be cleaning out LHW instead of whining. I'll smash his foreign face and arm triangle him back into the octogon. (Anderson, please don't go)

" take it back to 79' " is absolutely correct - even if the idiot has his apostrophe on the wrong side of '79. Silva's wins have been nothing but pure luck. All 22 of them. Beating people like Rich Franklin senseless - not once but twice - with the other guy on a stretcher and nary a scratch on him. Pure luck. The well-rounded training in Everything, his inexhaustible energy...pure dumb luck. That insane quickness, bulldog tenacity and sniper-like precision.....pure...luck?? Moron.

I think Silva should stay, this also shouldnt mean someone else has a better chance to win the title. Like we all have heard you have to beat the best to be the best!

Colorado Bob might be on to something but instead of him wanting to get paid not to retire; this could possibly be a ploy to get Anderson Silva out of the cage for a while. (a year, maybe more) Then have him make a COMEBACK for his title against whoever has it. He has proven everything there is to prove at Middleweight and he doesn't have to move up to LHW. I wouldn't doubt he would dominate but he really has nothing more to prove. He can slide out for a while and then come back when the time is right for mega $$$$$ and naturally stir things up to chaotic proportions. Kind of like BJ Penn...
Dana White really doesn't have anyone else to put agaisnt him in the MW division.......could it possibly be..........

first what up to the USUAL SUSPECTS... I guess I missed another Kimbo blog LOL.. was out of town this weekend and by the time I saw it there were already like 140 comments oh well...
second PROPS TO MAGGIE again... I'm feelin' your articles way more than Cofields... but since my homie unwrecked always jumps on him I'll leave it alone and just give you your props LOL...
now on to Anderson leaving... my first reaction is that this is some kind of ploy for publicity or something... but let's take the view that he's really serious about leaving. Not sure how old he is, but I don't think Anderson is 30 yet. Sometimes I think this happens w/ guys who do very well very early in their lives (remember BJ after beating Matt Hughes at 21 walked away from the UFC) and then they kind of get bored and feel like they have nothing left to prove. As Americans I think we all pretty much think the same thing: get the money. But there are two mitigating factors here 1) there isn't that much money in MMA to make you stay like in boxing where the de La hoya's and Tyson's of the world can get 8 figures just to show up. And many more can get 7 figures just to show up. and 2) Anderson is from Brazil.. as someone who has traveled I know that materialism doesn't mean as much in other countries besides the fact that Anderson probably already has enough money to retire in Brazil and live well. So think about it fellas.. if you weren't 30 and your life was pretty much already set you were considered by most people who care to be the best at what you do, would you still be fighting or would you retire to a nice beach in Brazil and stay in shape by chasing girls LOL?
As for him going into boxing I tend to agree that I've seen nothing of his boxing skills that would lead me to believe that he can compete w/ top tier boxers. Chad Dawson, Joe Calzaghe, Tarver, Pavlik, Winky all these guys would give Anderson fits as far as I can see.

Matt B dude Silva has a 1-1 boxing record and he is 40 lbs bigger than Mayweather. If he was a sure shot a boxing he would have did it. Boxing isn't dying boxing has been dying since Jack Johnson got beat in 19 09 or something. Boxing will be here. The only thing is the best should fight the best more. Thats why I love the idea of catch weights and the best meeting at catch weights. MMA is popular not in part because of the the none stop action but it is very visiable. We can almost see MMA 7 days a week. Boxings greed keeps us from watching fighters like Mike Tyson and Roy Jones on NBC like me and my grand father used to in the 80's.
Now for the actual blog disccussion. Man if Anderson retires that just makes for more money a yr or two from now. This is just like mayweather. Retire the best and people call you out because in the eyes of the people you are not the champion until you beat the champion. Its like Rocky 4 and 5. It just like Sugar Ray Leonard did. He retire the best when Hagler and those guys became champ the reporters would always ask them about Ray. Just like Randy Couture. When he was out the game No heavyweight couldn't go without answering questions about him. Silva is geeting bored and when you get bored you get sloppy and knocked out. If he is bored retire. Until somebody gives you that itch.

If he's serious about retiring by the end of 2009, then that's probably another 3 or 4 fights after Cote. If he wants to go down as the best of all time, I don't know that he can accomplish that in 3 or 4 fights.
One would have to be GSP at middleweight. You could say he hasn't cleared out middleweight until he beats Paulo Filho. Then maybe a couple of the top LHW, but who is that, really? Wanderlei?...Shogun?...Rampage? Not Forrest or Rashad.
It's probably a reach to stick him in against a marquee heavyweight except for Couture, who fought at 205 recently.

Norman R has a point.. Have any of you ever actually seen Anderson Silva sparring in straight boxing?? He would get eaten alive as a boxing LHW or Cruiserweight. He would be a mid level club fighter as a boxer... At best.. Stick to MMA dude. I know Dana dont pay, and boxing has better paydays ( that is why he called out Roy Jones) but you would be way out over your skis in boxing. As would any MMA fighter. Stick to what you know.. Dont embarrass your legacy by crossing over and getting embarrassed.. Even a old man like Roy Jones would whip your tail.. Or Bhop. If you could even make 168, or 175. Otherwise you are in Cruiserweight territory.. Please.. What a joke..

He's posturing for more money people. He needs to be paid at least as much as Chuck, Randy, and Lesnar. Especially because he could very well hold both the Middleweight and Lightheavy belts.
