Okay, it's a bit much to draw any comparisons to a legend like Randy Couture, but it's not often that a fighter starts his MMA career at 33 and looks like a world beater 22 months later at 35. But just like Couture, who made the transition from wrestling to MMA fighter at age 33, that's where Aaron Simpson is right now. No Simpson wasn't facing a top 10 middleweight but he made Ed Herman look like a clown with zero pedigree. Herman, a runner-up on The Ultimate Fighter 3, was beaten pillar to pillar and in every facet of the game in the opening round. It appeared he may have tweaked his left knee. Even after having his corner check the knee, Herman came out for the second, went down quickly and couldn't continue. Simpson gets his second UFC win at 0:17 of the second round.

Herman, an Oregon-native, had the crowd support but it wasn't enough.

"I was doing well you guys," Simpson told the crowd and UFC announcer Joe Rogan. "I'm getting better. We had a war going. I wanted to go three rounds. Thanks for the booes."

Simpson also said he's open to whatever the UFC wants to do with him, but they'd better take his age into account:

"I'm going to fight them one at a time. It's whoever Joe Silva wants to give me. I'm a little older so my days are numbered in this sport."

Simpson (6-0, 2-0 UFC) looked great on the feet consistently landing big right hands out of three and four punch combinations. Anytime the fighters clinched, Herman was tossed to the ground like a lightweight. And once it hit the mat, Simpson's ground and pound was suffocating.

I was calling a blowout on this one by Simpson as soon as the fight was announced. This dude is for real.

"Storm" was a good verb to describe Simpson in that fight.

Yes! I guess, I won $10 for putting two bets on Simpson. I see a good raw-talent for someone who had a late start!

Simpson has a lot of talent but he needs to get a clue as far as understanding how to close out a fight. He had Ed Herman in trouble a bunch of times and let him catch his wind by standing over him. He should have let a shaken Herman stand right up and go back to striking. Against a better fighter that could cost him a win.

    WTF??
Herman is a ginger, but hardly looked like a clown.
Simpson was impressive with his speed, but really didn't land much, didn't show any power, and was almost finished twice.
All around it was an even fight settled by a blown knee during a bad trip.
I know you guys get paid for hyperboyle, but give me a break.

Gotta agree with Christpher F. on this article. I'm glad for Simpson & for some journalist to make a big deal about age is ridiculous. Simpson is 35, not 95. We are all aging since birth, by the way. Hell, I'm 35 & in the best physical & mental shape in my life. I'm beginning my prime now. Guess that's the difference between athletes & journalists. Those that can't or won't do it, talk or write about it.

Agreed, and also agree with crazedcanuck: the fight was in no way decided before Ed Herman's knee went pop. (Ouch!) There were no clowns in the ring tonight, just one comedian.

ok, i have to agree with most of you. WHERE DO THEY GET THESE JOURNALISTS??? yahoo....do you need someone who at least KNOWS about this sport. I mean, did this clown say "he apparently 'tweaked' his knee"??????? Are you serious??? you dont even have to know about any sport to SEE CLEARLY there is a difference in what happened to his knee, and a "tweak"! plain and simple, ignorant! He might not have been winning at that moment, but ive seen Herman come back in the later rounds and look stronger, even finished some fights. ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN! If you wanna talk trash about a fighter, try fighting yourself!

Also why was he allowed to start the final round?
It was clear he was done, his corner should be ashamed.

canuck you're exactly right on all accounts......simpson looked good but needs more hips in his strikes and the ability to follow up on his combinations. not to mention herman was connecting almost as readily as he was, no head movement when in the pocket for either of these guys but at least herman was smart enough to keep getting out of the pocket when it got bad for him.....yet simpson rarely followed even though herman was moving straight back most of the time. and again, why the hell was he allowed to continue? did you guys hear yves lavigne telling him to protect his leg before the 2nd round? if the ref had enough sense to tell him to protect his leg what did he think was gonna happen? i bet he feels great about that decision now the herman prob has a torn something or other.

In total agreement with Christopher F and Mike:It is a fact that men continue to physically mature until age 25, afterwhich, one can pretty much sustain their 'prime' for decades. I'm 33 years old as well, and I don't feel physically different whether I'm hitting my weight routine or working, than I was when I was 21 years old(albeit, my mental outlook on life started to mature rapidly when I was 25 years old, as I became far less self-absorbed and selfish as an individual). Although, we men do start to grow 'outwards' in bulk after 35 years old, so lay off the excessive brew! I personally think that the vast segments of North American media, particularly Hollywood-centric culture, tends to portray anyone over 30 years of age as 'old'. This isn't the late 19th century anymore, when life expectancy was far lower than in the 21st century, amongst first-world nations, and people had no choice but to live life fast and to the fullest. Physical excercise and discipline is just one important factor of maintaining one's overall 'prime'. I personally know people (in their 20's) who have never excercised in their lives, and complain for days when they get any slight tension in their musculature.... those are usually the people who actually feel older than they look consistantly, or really are too undisciplined to maintain a daily moderate excercise routine for decades into the future. Really, 35 is not 'old', because we continually learn mentally as we get older as well. Don't pay attention to the Hollywood-centric viewpoints and images that're mistaken for facts these days, folks! We are not Sheep!

35 is getting up there for fighting so yes hes an old timer and is passing gas all the time in that fight. Look how he spun around it was farts pushing him around! Sad but true facts of fighting old timers in this sport ruled by teens chewing gum when they fight.

Cofield - "he made Ed Herman look like a clown with zero pedigree." WoW, obviously you were playing pocket pool instead of watching the fight!
Ed had a blowout! That's all, period. Just because a guy's knee gives out does not mean he is a clown with zero pedigree.
"It appeared he may have tweaked his left knee" - R U Kidding me Cofield!?! "tweaked"!??! Like I said, you need to stop playing pocket pool and watch the fights, 'cause they replayed this in super slow motion and brother, let me tell you something, that was a painful-to-watch knee BLOWOUT! Then you clown Herman and basically say he got scrubbed up by Simpson. You, Cofield guy, are a jackass!

herman's knee blowout first occured with less than 40 seconds left in round 1. the blowout was because of simpson's trip when herman's leg was planted. the blowout had little to do with the outcome, as simpson was destroying herman for the first 4:20. simpson dominated the standup, had a knockdown, a huge slam, and took herman down at will. herman's only offense was an upkick. respect to herman for even coming out to round 2, his knee was torn already. simpson simply looked great, good speed and takedowns. just would have liked to see him use gnp, but i'm sure that will happen later. herman did not look good before the blowout, point cofield.
