Alves misses weight for main event

LONDON — For the first time since Travis Lutter at UFC 67, a main event fighter on a UFC card failed to make weight.

Thiago Alves, who is facing Matt Hughes in the oft-changed main event, weighed in at 174, four pounds over the welterweight limit of 170 for their bout Saturday at the O2 Arena.

Alves will be forced to give 10 percent of his purse to Hughes, who met the 170-pound limit on the mark.

"I'm wondering if this kid should be at 170 or not," UFC president Dana White said. "If this were a title fight, I'd be really pissed. What are you going to do? Matt Hughes agreed to fight him at 175, so it's not all bad. ... I can't wait to get this card behind me, to be honest with you.

"Eight guys dropped out. The main event guy can't make weight. It's crazy."

The rest of the weigh-in went off without a hitch, as all of the other fighters made weight successfully.

The complete weigh-in results:

Matt Hughes (170) vs. Thiago Alves (174)

Michael Bisping (184) vs. Jason Day (184)

Mike Swick (170) vs. Marcus Davis (170)

Thales Leites (185) vs. Nate Marquardt (185)

Fabricio Werdum (247) vs. Brandon Vera (228)

Martin Kampmann (186) vs. Jorge Rivera (185)

Thiago Tavares (154 1/2) vs. Matt Wiman (155)

Kevin Burns (170) vs. Roan Carneiro (171)

Luiz Cane (204) vs. Jason Lambert (205)

Jess Liaudin (169) vs. Paul Taylor (169)

Eddie Sanchez (244) vs. Antoni Hardonk (247)

I'd be upset too if my fighters can't make weight.

Blown opportunity by Alves, if he loses, he'll probably be shown the door by Zuffa.

This is crazy. It shows a lack of respect for Hughes and the sport. Alves is supposed to be a professional yet he cant make wait.

Alves just proved to me that he doesn't belong in the UFC send him to Elite they allow fighters who can't watch their weight to fight

Matt Hughes basically had no choice. It's the day before the fight, what's he gonna say - I don't want to fight him because he can't make weight. Matt knows what this fight card has gone thru - he's a professional.
Also, anyone else notice how Matt always steps in when something happens to another fighter?
I hope Matt makes Alves pay for his mistake; I believe Alves did it on purpose to try and have an edge on Matt. Come on now 4 pounds, I mean really.

alvez is making it clear he isn't ready to be a main event fighter. it must have gotten to him. dana's right, this is a card we need to get over fast. especially with the free shows last weekend. and we're supposed to pay for this? c'mon. i know dana will find a way to give something back to us. and fire alves when he loses. u don't prepare for hughes, he takes u down.

    17, no...its a ppv card
8, thats not what hes saying at all, its still a decent card with good looking fights up and down the card. Bisping/Day could be explosive, Vera/Werdum is a interesting matchup, if you don't see good fights...eh...rewatch CBS last sideshow...what dana is saying is that this card has been a NIGHTMARE to keep together.

Not making weight is VERY unprofessional. You KNOW ahead of time what's going on, so Alves has no excuses. This is a sport where the whole weight concept is spelled out...they even allow a one lb. overage so to show up FOUR POUNDS overweight means he isn't taking this seriously. Matt is a very muscular dude, I've met him several times in Atlantic City, and he always makes weight. I hope Matt makes an example of Thiago the same way Anderson Silva tooled Travis Lutter.

This is just another reason why this card should have been broadcasted for free and not on PPV. I'm not ordering it. I don't know anyone who is. But I do expect to read all about Hughes thrashing a stressed out Alves shortly after. Get 'em, Matt.

There's absolutely no excuse for Thiago not to make weight. I would impose a harsher penalty. 10% isn't enough. Maybe they should declare a forfeit. Bet ya no one else would miss weight in the future. Aside from that I think this is a really good card with some great match-ups. I'm looking forward to it.

I'm surprised he is only four pounds over, his usual walking weight is around 190-200 lbs - he's a fatass.

yeah I gotta go with the general consensus here, alves should have made weight, even so it could be a good fight and there are some interesting match-ups on this card, but say compared to last month's card or even the WEC card last weekend this one is pretty lame I wouldn't pay to watch it.

Matt Hughes taking this fight says a lot more than Thiago Alves not making weight. I may not be a Hughes fan but the world of sports, not just MMA, needs more athletes like Matt Hughes. It's great to find out that there still exists athletes who fight for passion for the sport than just money. First, Hughes takes the fight on short notice then he agrees to fight a guy who's heavier than he is. As for Thiago, his team is as much to blame, perhaps even more, because fighters only need to concentrate on training. His team needs to make sure he stays on course and not worry about anything else except the fight.

yah..yah..yah. what will all your comments be like when Hughes gets crushed? i'll pay for it just to watch that fight alone. his last few fights have been hilarious. 4 pounds is a lot of weight to lose when you only have 7 percent body fat or less.

hughes has no choice but take the fight, he is trying to get back at the top so what is he going to do say no and have to wait for another fight and then another 2 to fight the champion, and when he does beat Alves everyone is going to talk smack on him cuz he was overweight and thats the only reason he did and as it is they cant get enought fighters for ufc at the moment at the weight classes now imagine adding 4 more weight classes
