The first signs of a crack in the Affliction fighting gameplan emerged last week. There was a story on WrestlingObserver.com by Yahoo! Sports Dave Meltzer that Affliction had asked its fighters to take a 50% pay cut on upcoming cards. Maybe Dana White's claim that Affliction fighting would be out of business soon held some water.

The story has been changed a few times over the last week or so. Josh Barnett posted a response on MySpace and then told FightOpinion.com that he wouldn't take a 50% pay cut if asked.

Barnett, who is facing Andrei Arlovski on Oct. 11 in Las Vegas, appeared on Vegas' ESPNRadio1100 on Monday and again backed up his MySpace claim that Affliction hadn't asked anyone to take a paycut:

{ysp:block}"Basically (Affliction VP) Tom (Atencio) was saying that if other fighters were thinking Affliction was a cash cow and they were all going to jump in and get paid exorbitant amounts of money, that they were mistaken. The guys that are there, they're not asking anyone to take a paycut."{ysp:block}

CLICK BELOW TO HEAR EXCERPTS OF THE BARNETT INTERVIEW (w/Cofield & Cokin on ESPNRadio1100):

Barnett went out of his way to defend Meltzer saying that he generally does a good job but that he missed the mark on this story. When ESPNRadio1100 contacted Meltzer he stood by the story and gave further clarification. It sounds like Barnett is defending Affliction but hasn't been told the entire story by management.

Meltzer said that Atencio told him that fighters needed to work with Affliction on salary issues or they weren't going to last much longer. Meltzer also said an agent that he spoke with did confirm that Affliction requested a 50% paycut with one of his fighters but that was only in cases where the fighter was going to face an easier opponent. Easier opponent? Who determines what an easy opponent is? Bottomline, Affliction has asked fighters to take paycuts in certain situations according to Meltzer.

The 'Babyface Assassin' breaks down Fedor's injury, why UFC never called him as a free agent and how he ripped Ben Rothwell after his Arlovski fight. He also challenges Arlovski's ground game and explains whether the Affliction company model will work longterm. You can hear the entire Barnett conversation here.

One side note about Barnett. He did indicate that he knew about this fight shortly after the Jul. 19 Affliction 'Banned' card. He did an interview with MMARated.com before the Jul. 26 Elite XC event and took a laissez faire attitude when asked about getting passed over for a Fedor fight.

Around the 2:00 mark of the conversation, Barnett told Ariel Helwani that he didn't know who his next opponent would be. Barnett indicated to ESPNRadio1100 that he did know about the Fedor injury and that Arlovski would be his opponent at the time of the interview. Barnett is good company man but he screwed Helwani out of a nice scoop.

Dana White actually knows how to treat and pay his fighters, a real business man. UFC is the undisputed champion of the world when it comes to MMA. Affliction is just a bunch of boring big guys going at it, where's the weight classes??!!??

LakersWOO! You must be nutz!! You think Dana White pays his fighters?? Check out the salaries for each fight! He only pays a select few and the others mostly get under 40k per fight. His bonuses have gone up only because of the competition Affliction and XC Elite is giving him. He is a good businessman but that doesnt make him good for the fans! He is for Dana White and that's it!

    clinton m... preach!!
Lesnar gets 250K a fight with a record of 0-1 in the UFC.. 1-1 MMA
Rampage to defend his title as LHW champion and long time MMA fighter against Griffin got 225K..
Go Affliction.!!! They will withstand the lean times and fighters will make their way over to their roster. Dana White learned a lot from his failures in boxing. He learned to be even more shrewd and cheap.. He is a doughboy that looks like a dingaling on juice.. Cofield is under his desk.. It is all annoying.......

josh barnett is an idiot. what a loser, he can't even admit why dana hates him when we all know the answer is "steroids." he won the hw title on steroids, got suspended, and fled the ufc to fight in japan. he didn't even wait for his suspension to finish.

Tony C....are you kidding me???? Dana White is a genious! He created The Ultimate Fighter Reality Show and uses it to create his own stars. When a fighter gets big and deserves more $$$..... Dana cuts him loose (That is unless a fighter is one of his boys or is still under a cheap contract for a bunch of fights). Without Affliction or Elite XC giving former UFC Fighters a chance to go and continue to fight....We, as fans, will lose our stars one by one as they get recyled by "TUF" stars and up and comers who get paid barely nothing.
I love what the UFC has done for MMA but it doesnt give them the right to make or break a fighters career.....That should happen in the cage!

Fanaticism rules when it comes to UFC fanboys. They dont realize how the fighters are horribly under paid and exploited for our viewing pleasure. I am all for MMA and the UFC. But I cant look past how Dana White bashes boxing, and then sticks it to his own fighters. I think his disdain for boxing comes from the fact he was a failure in that game. He was a sinking ship with the UFC till he stoked the interest of some billionaire brothers.. Otherwise, it would still be in debt, or gone altogether.. Wouldnt we all love to have some billionaire brothers backing us with their wisdom and endless cake.....

As for Barnett.. Good for you mate. When I took roids my bench went from 335 for 2 reps max to 375 for 5 reps. And I was taking a baby dose.. Can you imagine how much I would be throwing up if I took the same amount as say..... Monson, Bonner, Dana White..?? LMFAO. Do you think he has those puffy cheeks for no reason?? He can juice, but his fighters cant??? Go fight in Japan where there is no double standards and if you win, you win...

I've watched shows from basically every promotion out there probably at least 5 years. Dream, Pride, IFL, UFC, WEC, Elite XC, Affliction (while they one card they have had anyway), etc, etc. I've only been reading the Yahoo MMA section for a few months however, but never posted until yesterday as I was finally got tired of you two. No matter what the topic of the blog, I cannot recall the last time your entire post was about how the UFC and Dana White suck. So it seems a bit fishy.
There are so many more interesting MMA topics than D. White to discuss, the fact that almost every single post you two ever make seems to revolve around that topic, certainly makes one curious about your motivation.

Kevis S, Dana White hates Barnett becasue Barnett talks a lot of smack and doesn't let people like Dana White take shots at him. It further fueled the fire when Barnett stated publicly that he would destroy Couture again, which he would.
Don't you think it's pretty silly that Dana is not interested in a top 5 HW (IMO #3 behind Nog) in a division in which they are incredibly weak at all because of some personal vendetta?
That's not the wisest of business decisions and is just further evidence of Dana White's immaturity. The guy's a clown.

Tony C, the only problem with there being 1 organization and it being the UFC is that the best will only be fighting the best 50% of the time at best and on any given card there will be 2 fights or less on average that have world class fighters on it (They don't stack their cards like PRIDE did, they just water them down to increase the number of events they produce each year and utulize the cheap labor by shoving TUF'ers down our throats). They use the Ultimate Fighter show to create super stars out of thin air.Almost all of those kids are hacks but the UFC uses Spike as their hype machine and within a few segments are able convince casual fans that these kids are world class. The UFC gets very cheap labor out of them so that will likely never change.
Then we get Griffin vs Rampage esque matchups. Though Forrest won he was not the leading candidate for a titel shot, it was Machida (the matchups was still phenomenal but the rightful contender was screwed yet again). Forrest only got the shot because of notaoiety so to create a huge PPV draw and now that he won, the UFC is just running with it to try and cash in on the biggest PPV draw in their history. Hence Chuck vs Rashad (Rashad shouldn't have gotten this fight) with the plan for a Chuck vs Forrest New Years Eve Main Event. The UFC is dirty, they dictate the matchups instead of letting the fighters performances dictate the matchups.
Chuck vs Machida should've been the fight but they want Chuck with the strap again so are feeding him what they've fed him throughout his entire MMA career, another wrestler (or grappler) who will be at a distinct disadvantage.

some of these guys in affliction did get some nice pay checks should they take a pay cut? i don't know, i know i wouldn't want to take a pay cut at my job. due some of these guys deserve that type of money? thats another topic but guys like fedor, arlov, lindland, barnett those are mma world class athletes proven and they do deserve to get paid the top dollar.
the fact of the matter is if you are paying your workers more than what you are bringing in you are losing money and it's a business. they do need to make some budget cuts and bring in some more ppv's which i am sure they will there next card in order to survive but they have a strong support in trump which has deep pockets. i am sure they are willing to take a couple of losses before hitting it big.

Tony c. you dont understand free market capitalism do you?? A monopoly is never good in any form. The more fight organizations, the more, thats right, the more MMA will flourish. The more platforms the better. And the more competition the better, not only for us the viewer, but most of all the fighters being able to negotiate respectable deals for themselves with more than one organization.. I am all for good fights, but I am also for fighters that put in on the line getting paid. You have to remember, they have managers that get a chunk, taxes, etc etc.. 200k may sound like a lot, but at the end of the day, the fighter is lucky to end up with 40% of that..

I love competition too but the reality is Affliction is gonna have to make some money and make it soon. Do you honestly think Trump is gonna keep pumping money into a shinking ship. With Fedor injured and Attencio asking his fighters to take a 50% pay cut things aren't looking too good right now for Affliction.

unwrecked, actually I have a economics background and work in high finance. Fee market capitalism is deeply flawed which is why in the US we don't have it. We have laws and regulations (like the Clayton and Sherman antitrust acts) to constrain capitalism. Fee market capitalism will over time alway trend toward monopolies (as capitalism maximizes profit and a monopoly is the most profitable state) which agreed in all cases will become abusive to one party or another if left alone. The truth is sometimes there are things we call "natural monopolies". These take many forms but I would argue sports is one of the areas these make sense. The fans benefit from these monopolies as they get to see all the best compete with each other. In those cases (like the NFL, NBA, etc), they are give a government granted monopoly exemption but have to live with additional rules to ensure they don't abuse that power. Those rules often take the form of worker protections like unions to protect them (as in this rare case consumers actually naturally benefit from the monopoly but the workers could easily be abused).
I would argue that MMA as most sports is a "natural monopoly" and like other such entities will only reach full potential when that state is achieved. If that state is avoided (like in boxing) fans become fragmented and frustrated and lose interest.

he knows what he deserves. if they dont wanna pay it, he'll go elsewhere. thats the beauty of it. hes a legit fighter and can make good money doing it. not too mention he needs that extra 50% to buy the good steroids.

Ron M, you're a clown. That's why you troll yahoo blogs instead of posting at respected MMA websites where you would get embarrassed but may eventually stop being so stubborn and ignorant and actually learn something. You're not only a clown but a troll as well who posts nothing but worthless jabber. I can learn absolutely nothing from you regarding MMA so what good are you?
Chuck was fed wrestlers and grapplers throughout his career, it's a known fact that even Chuck fans accept (ones with the mental capacity above a 6th grade level). Chuck has always struggled with strikers and who were the 3 names you mentioned? Oh that's right, Jardine, Rampage and Silva (how very retarded of you to even bring up those 3 names in a debate about Chuck fighting wrestlers and grapplers throughout his career). Chuck's got a combined 1-3 record against those 3. For people with common sense and logic (neither of which criteria you fit-the-bill for) it's a dead giveaway of why he was fed mostly 1 dimensional wrestlers and grapplers... Could it be that Chuck's always struggled with strikers? Hence Mezger, Overeem, Rampage, Jardine and even Couture and his average at best boxing all giving Chuck problems. He blocks punches with his face so it only works well against wrestlers and grapplers who don't have KO power.
