On a wacky night of WEC action in Hollywood, Florida it had to happen this way. Riding a 13-fight win streak, Urijah Faber got sloppy and paid the price. Faber tried to deliver a silly back elbow from long distance. Mike Brown countered below the elbow with a right hand that nearly lifted Faber off the canvas. 'The California Kid' went down in a heap with 2:54 left in the first round and immediately went into the turtle position. Brown jumped on top and landed most of the 29 punches and hammerfists that he threw. The 24th blow thrown by Brown actually snapped Faber's head back. Referee Troy Waugh jumped in stopping the fight seconds later at 2:23 of the first. Brown handed Faber his first loss since 2005 and gained the WEC Featherweight belt.

"I don't have a lot of knockouts on my record," said an excited Brown."But I (expletive) hit hard."

During some early clinches, Brown (20-4) stymied Faber with his strength. Then Brown got Faber to lose his cool when placed his hands in his face and tossed the shorter fighter to the ground. Faber got up with an angry look and puts his hands to his side. Seconds later Brown again tossed Faber into the cage and that's when he made the fatal mistake with the sloppy elbow attempt.

With Faber (21-2) carrying the promotion the last few years, it's likely that we'll see an immediate rematch. It won't be easy to get his title. This was no fluke. Brown definitely belonged in the cage with Faber.

"I train with the best team in the world. We have so much depth. So many great guys," said Brown, a 32-year old native of Maine. "All I gotta do is perform like I do in training everyday and I know I can beat anyone in the world."

In the co-main event, a disinterested Paulo Filho was knocked from the unbeaten ranks by Chael Sonnen. Jen Pulver suffered a devastating TKO loss at the hands of Leonard Garcia.

Rematch all you want; the outcome will be the same. Brown was clearly focused and exposed Faber big time. Browns strength is just too much.

Faber’s pride definitely got in the way while he was getting tossed around and he ended up making a very sloppy mistake. Congrats to Brown for capitalizing.

This was not an exposure. I dislike people who watch a fighter lose after a long winning streak and then pronounce that he has been "exposed". "Exposed" was Mirko Cro Cop in the UFC, where he repeatedly lost against supposedly inferior competition. So let's agree that a fighter has to lose multiple times before they are "exposed". Chuck Liddell, you're on notice, you are one fight away from being "exposed" and one could make a case that he has been "exposed".
As far as this particular fight, Faber has a history of making wild, sloppy moves look fantastic and be heralded as an innovator, when in actuality the move was not that effective and shouldn't have even been performed in the first place. Mike Brown just taught Faber a painful lesson that Faber can not get away with such sloppy moves and be successful. The rematch will be fun to watch and I would venture to guess that the first WEC event of 2009 is when it will happen again (I'd also venture to guess that the fight will happen in California to give Faber a tiny advantage because the WEC needs "The California Kid" to be the unbeatable force that everyone wants to see and not some guy who can be beat just like the rest).

It was his pride that lost him this match. He threw that strike out of anger and got KO's. He hurt brown bad with that knee to the body. Brown couldn't even leave the arena with our help. If it had gotten past the first round Brown wouldn't of been able to continue.

faber got his ass kicked plain and simple. If it would have been the other way around fans would be posting him foe senator. good to see brown keep composure and finish, especially in the first round. excellent reflexes on that punch.

Faber got sloppy and made a mistake. Brown is a strong fighter and you cannot be sloppy against a fighter like him. Had Faber not lost his cool he would have won the match. He hurt Brown bad early in the fight and more pounding by Faber would have put him away. Faber is exciting to watch and I look forward to the rematch. Maybe this will be a wake up call for him.

It was a very good fight, I'm a big Urijah Faber fan but I think Brown might have Faber's number, I think he's just too big and too strong. But who knows. As for PeeWee's comment about Chuck Liddell being one fight away from being "exposed"?! Theres a difference between being exposed and just not being able to keep up with today's talent. I agree with you on Cro Cop, But Liddell is a man who won and successfully defended the UFC Title. If you look at his win record the fact that he was a great fighter is just that..... FACT. But I believe his time has passed and don't think we'll be seeing him in the top ranks of the light heavyweight division again.

I loved the comment by mir as best pound for pound. I know they are pumping the kid up but cmon. urijah just goes for too many hail mary shots to be consistent enough for the p4p title. it happened in the griffin fight when he went for the superman punch and got caught. He is no doubt one of my favorite fighters to watch but is not close to as technically sound as anderson silva.

I cant really say from this fight that Brown was too big, more powerful, or anything along those lines. Perhaps he is. Though in this fight, appears that Faber was reading too much of his own press. A little too overconfident you think. I mean really, what was that he tried to hit him with?? A reverse elbow, backhanded elbow, whats the technical term for that strike? Nobody in REAL MMA tries crap like that. Especially not against an opponent of Browns quality. But lesson learned, he wont be making that mistake again and will be a better fighter for it. Was shaping up to be a good fight though. Brown seemed unafraid of anything Faber had to offer. While Faber appeared to be waiting for counterstrike oppertunities.

You're absolutely correct Alex. I agree with what you said. What I really mean is that Liddell is one fight away from being "exposed" as no longer even being in the discussion as far as top light heavyweights today and everyone knowing how to defeat him. He is a legend and in his prime was a bad, bad man.

Faber got careless and got caught. Simple as that. He will win the rematch....which might take awhile cuz it looked like he cracked Brown's ribs with a knee.

Nobody was exposed, Brown perfectly countered the elbow with a parry and hard right hand to the button. Faber got caught. He doesn't suck, Brown wasn't lucky, as was stated in the article, Faber made a mistake and Brown capitalized on it. That's what years of training teaches you - instant reaction. Kudos to Brown for a great victory, and looking forward to a rematch in a few months.

Faber is a good fighter his win streak was a result of marketing we were lead to believe he was the best because the WEC told us so he fought part timers and c-level comp.
