D.C. United says Tom Soehn has withdrawn from consideration to stay on as the team's coach after three seasons. Soehn's contract expires at the end of 2009, and the team says on its Web site it will start searching for a replacement immediately. United was 36-30-24 in Major League Soccer matches under Soehn.

Landon Donovan is a finalist for Major League Soccer's MVP award and Kasey Keller is up for three postseason honors. Donovan, the Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder, FC Dallas' Jeff Cunningham and New England's Shalrie Joseph were the top three in voting by league players, general managers, coaches, referees and media.

D.C. United president Kevin Payne was fined $5,000 by Major League Soccer, then apologized Thursday for criticizing the league and three of its teams. The MLS said Payne was punished for "public comments deemed detrimental to the public image of the league" and pointed to an item posted on The Washington Post's Web site this week.

DC United goalie Wicks has shoulder surgery (AP)

D.C. United goalie Josh Wicks is expected to be sidelined for four to six months after having surgery on his left shoulder. He was hurt when he collided with another player during a 2-1 loss to the San Jose Earthquakes on Sept. 27. Wicks joined United at the start of the season and started 19 games, with a 1.40 goals-against average and five shutouts.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (STATS) - One foul in the penalty area launched D.C. United's second-half comeback, but the next one rendered that meaningless. The only common factor was the same man was at the heart of both plays. Claudio Lopez's penalty kick in second-half stoppage time salvaged a 2-2 tie for the Kansas City Wizards on Saturday night, effectively ending D.C.

Israel Lopez's 62nd-minute penalty lifted Mexican club Toluca to a 1-1 draw with D.C. United in the CONCACAF Champions League on Tuesday. Chris Pontius scored for the Americans in the fifth minute. The draw gives Toluca 13 points and first place in Group B in the final round of group games. D.C. United have 10 points.

DC United's Quaranta recovering from foot surgery (AP)

D.C. United midfielder Santino Quaranta is recovering from foot surgery that will sideline him for the rest of the season. Quaranta underwent a procedure Wednesday to repair a ruptured plantar plate in his left foot's first metatarsal. He is expected to be sidelined four to six months. Quaranta had a similar injury in his right foot in 2006 while playing for the New York Red Bulls.
