Sounders 0, Dynamo 1

HOUSTON (AP)—Naturally, the top two defensive teams in the MLS fought to a scoreless tie for 90 minutes with their seasons on the line.

Brian Ching broke the deadlock with what he called one of the greatest shots of his career.

Ching scored six minutes into overtime and the Houston Dynamo advanced to the Western Conference final for the third time in four years with a 1-0 win over the Seattle Sounders on Sunday.

The teams both allowed only 29 goals in the regular season, the lowest in MLS. They tied 0-0 in the first leg of their two-game semifinal on Oct. 29, setting up the winner-take-all match in Houston.

Houston defender Mike Chabala set up the winning shot with a high cross from the left. The ball deflected off midfielder Brian Mullan and right to Ching, who beat goalkeeper Kasey Keller with a shot to the top left corner.

“I just kind of turned and hit one of the best shots of my life,” Ching said. “I was happy to see that go in.”

The Dynamo advances to the single-game West final to face the winner of the Chivas USA-Los Angeles match later Sunday. Houston improved to 5-1 at home in the playoffs and 9-1-6 at home this season.

Houston won the MLS championships in 2006 and ’07, and Ching said the team drew on that experience as Sunday’s game wore on.

“We’ve put expectations on ourselves,” said Ching, the franchise’s all-time leader in playoff goals (6). “Every year, we’re one of those teams that realistically feels like we’re one of those teams that can win the MLS Cup. The proof is in our results.”

The Sounders, an expansion team, wrapped up their inaugural season by losing to Houston for the first time in five games (2-1-2).

“We attributed ourselves really well, and the city was phenomenally behind us,” Keller said. “Now we have to take the pill of not winning this time and we have to go out and spend the offseason thinking about how we’re going to make it better.”

Seattle defender James Riley earned a red card in the final minute of overtime after tripping Ricardo Clark. The teams exchanged words at midfield before referee Jorge Gonzalez got in the middle of the crowd.

Houston outshot Seattle 15-10.

Dominic Oduro had three of Houston’s nine first-half shots, including a drive off the left post in the 23rd minute. The 24-year-old forward from Ghana caught up to a long pass from Stuart Holden in the 30th minute, but his shot crossed just in front of the goal.

“I don’t think we panicked,” Ching said. “We were just a little unlucky on a lot of opportunities in the first half.”

Seattle’s best chances in the first half came on counterattacks, before the Dynamo’s defense could get set.

Fredy Montero ran past a Houston defender, but his close range shot went into the side of the net. Steve Zakuani sent a cross into the goal area in the 36th minute and Houston’s Geoff Cameron nearly deflected it into the net for an own goal.

Pat Onstad made a diving stop on Montero’s shot in the 57th minute, one of the few scoring chances for either team in the second half.

“We knocked on the door a few times,” Keller said, “but we just couldn’t sustain enough pressure.”

The Dynamo were back in the same position as they were last season, hosting a decisive game in the West semifinals. They tied New York 1-1 in the first game last year, then lost 3-0 in Houston.

Thank you Sounder FC for an amazing (first) year of soccer. Houston is a tough team. Bad timing to have one of your most out of control games of the year. Hopefully a better seating next year and we play this one at home.

Houston has a good team and will matches up quite well with LA.

Chivas has strong players but they need a new coach to take a fresh look. They looked disorganized in the game against LA!!

Yup, LA and Hollywood is where the media is but I will take the Dynamo's any day. Houston has a great team, with good camaraderie, strong passing game and with strong players in key positions.

    Go Dynamo!!

How is it that the Seattle-Houston game goes into overtime, and is decided by a dramatic goal, while Chivas-LA was a foregone conclusion for LA, but still had to be decided by a PK for 1-0 finish and LA gets the headline on Yahoo AND ESPN.com! I guess we know what story the media want for the final.

Absolutely amazing goal by Ching... unfortunately for me i was on the other side of the stadium when it happened... but back to business. Excellent series from both squads, Keller is a great goalie as is Onstad, even at 39 and 42, respectfully. Seattle needs to put Jaqua where he has normally played, up front, he played that in Houston and did very well, i see why the Sounders took him in their draft. Both Seattle and Houston have solid lineups, but i believe the better team won today.

    GO DYNAMO!!!!

BEAT LA! BEAT LA! BEAT LA!

Excellent goal by Ching. Houston did play better the second leg. Seattle lost it in the first leg when they should have scored. Montero didn't do that much. Jaqua spent too much time on the wing as well as Zakuani. They should think about playing Zakuani up top more as he is really a forward.

HOUSTON.... anyways great series between two tough teams.. houston had the better of play today and it still had to come down to one amazing shot to break the deadlock..

PS clark a dirty player?? huh i have been watching him play for 3 years havent seen it... (yes he caught jaqua in seattle but jaqua lowered his head into it. juqua didnt bother to argue about it because he knew it was not on purpose plus jaqua has got class (he acquired that from dom in houston))

Seattle fans keep up the good work, its good for the league but this dynamo fans is glad to see this one is over... LA next!

ALex is immature im glad not all of you guys are like him

cheers i can not wait for the rematch next year

#29 let me add...To the respectful Seattle fans, thanks for the fight and we look forward to playing you guys next year and watching you play CONCACAF games. To the Seattle fans in the supporter group who couldn't stop chanting Sounders stuff during the Moment of Silence for the Fort Hood shooting, this win is for you.

As an expansion team Seattle Sounders have done well. If anything that hurt the players it would be letting officiating getting into their heads, too much. Complaining too much about officiating hurt their level of play. Houston on the other hand was well rested and Mike Chavalo is a lot better player than Wade Barret and should continue starting at left defense.

Now to soccer...I attended several of the Sounders' games, including the Chelsea and Barcelona games, and with the exception of the game against Galaxy, the Sounders got favorable calls from the refs. Too many times the Sounders got away with tackling and shoving. I know the Dynamo are a physical team, but in no way can Seattle claim to be a clean team.

Post #24: Tough luck. The better team won. Claim what you want, but the Dynamo are a better team. Houston's best players were off playing in a tournament with the national team when Houston came to Seattle in the regular season. Last weekend's game in Seattle was Houston's fourth game in about 2 weeks and they still managed to tie.

Post # 19... Thank you for defending our nation. We appreciate you and other who serve in the armed forces.

Now lets talk soccer... How can you call Seattle the dirty team? In game 1 the goalie should of been red carded and usually Clark does enough dirty fouls to earn 2 reds a game. Houston plays a game that gets into other teams heads with their physical play.

Good luck Houston, at this point I'd like to see you win it all.

Seattle's dirty playing couldn't get them a win this time. I'm a Texan stationed in Washington state so it makes this win even better. I wonder how much crap seattle fans will talk now.
