FOXBOROUGH, Massachusetts (Ticker)—Not much went right for the New England Revolution until the final minutes on Saturday night.
Steve Ralston and Taylor Twellman scored late goals as the Revolution salvaged a 2-2 tie against Real Salt Lake in a contest loaded with playoff implications.
Ralston scored in the 78th minute and Twellman tallied one minute later to erase a two-goal deficit for New England (12-8-7), which is on the brink of the postseason.
The Revolution needed a win, a loss by the New York Red Bulls and either a loss or draw by DC United.
New England needed late offense just to salvage the draw in this one, while DC United suffered a 3-0 setback against Chivas USA. The Red Bulls also cooperated, suffering a 3-1 loss to Toronto FC.
The Revolution, who are 1-1-2 in all-time home meetings against Real Salt Lake, are aiming for their 10th playoff appearance in the franchise’s 13-year history.
New England charged back late in the match, getting on the board when Ralston notched his eighth goal of the season - an unassisted tally. Twellman also went in by himself and netted his seventh goal of the campaign to knot the game at 2-2.
Javier Morales and Andy Williams - who was ejected for violent conduct during stoppage time - each scored a goal for Real Salt Lake (9-10-8).
