EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP)—Clint Mathis had a goal and an assist in his return to New York, leading the Red Bulls to a 3-0 victory over FC Dallas on Sunday in a match played in a heavy, wind-swept rain.

Mathis, the second-leading scorer in franchise history, assisted on the game’s first goal in the 18th minute. His corner kick was redirected by Jozy Altidores, who headed the ball past FC Dallas goalie Shaka Hislop.

The Red Bulls added another score when Altidores fed Mathis, who beat Hislop in the 34th minute for his first goal since he was acquired from Colorado in a trade two weeks ago. Dave van den Bergh closed the scoring in stoppage time, getting an unassisted goal in the 93rd minute.

Ronald Waterreus started in goal for the Red Bulls (1-0-1), but only played the first half due to an undisclosed illness and was replaced by Jon Conway. They combined to stop three shots, while Hislop had five saves for FC Dallas (1-1-1).

FC Dallas defender David Wagenfuhr left the game in the 18th minute, after he was hit in the head with a Mathis shot. Wagenfuhr—who sustained two concussions last season—was taken to a nearby hospital as a precaution, but his injuries were not believed to be serious.
