EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP)—Mike Magee scored in the 25th minute to give the New York Red Bulls a 1-0 victory over the Kansas City Wizards on Saturday night.
Goalie Jon Conway, filling while Tony Meola recovers from a bacterial infection in his foot and ankle, made four saves in posting his third straight shutout for New York (5-6-8). Bo Oshoniyi had five saves for Kansas City (6-11-2), which lost its seventh straight game.
Magee’s goal came after rookie defender Marvell Wynne, the first overall selection in this year’s Major League Soccer draft, made a fine play to get the ball near midfield and passed it ahead to midfielder Seth Stammler.
After avoiding a tackler, Stammler touched it across to the streaking Magee, who knocked it past Oshoniyi for his third goal of the season. Stammler and Wynne were credited with assists, and Wynne’s point was the first of his professional career.
The Wizards had their best chance to score in added time, when Ryan Pore’s shot eluded Conway, but midfielder Todd Dunivant was able to knock the ball aside while he stood at the backline. A subsequent header by the Wizards’ Jimmy Conrad on a rebound was caught by a diving Conway to seal the shutout.
