Rumors about Chicago Fire’s Marco Pappa resurface: Fan’s reaction
Rumors about the Chicago Fire's Marco Pappa leaving for FC Twente have resurfaced. Less than a month after the initial rumors began, fans are again hearing that the midfielder is abandoning the team. However, Marco Pappa and the Fire's coach Frank Klopas have denied these rumors.
On Aug. 31, fans reported seeing an announcement on Marco Pappa's official Facebook page, "Casi cerrado el traspaso al [T]wente!! [H]olandes!! [Almost closed the transfer to Twente! Dutch!]" However, the announcement was missing from Pappa's Facebook page on Sept. 1 and has not reappeared. Did Pappa delete the comment? Was his Facebook page hacked and was the announcement posted by someone else? Marco Pappa has not responded to questions about the post.
The rumors about Marco Pappa's transfer to FC Twente from the Chicago Fire began on Aug. 15 and quickly spread. Originally posted in the Dutch paper De Telegraaf, FC Twente was allegedly planning to pay Pappa $2.1 million for the transfer. Neither FC Twente nor the Chicago Fire responded to these transfer rumors initially.
On Aug. 17, Pappa denied the legitimacy of the transfer and stated, "It's just a rumor." However, he did not deny eventually moving beyond Major League Soccer to play for Europe. Chicago's head coach Frank Klopas also stated that the team had not been contacted by FC Twente. Nevertheless, he remains open to the possibility of selling Marco Pappa in the future. The arrival of talented new midfielders, Sebastian Grazzini and Pavel Pardo, have made Pappa's presence less important, and the team is less dependent on him.
The transfer window for Europe closed on Aug. 31. Marco Pappa is still under contract with the Chicago Fire for the rest of this season and the 2012 season. Currently, Pappa is fulfilling his international duties and is training with the rest of the Guatemalan team to prepare for the World Cup qualifier. He should return to the Chicago Fire after his international duties.
The new rumors about the transfer to FC Twente have not been confirmed, but they seem doubtful. Although Marco Pappa is probably not going to leave the team this year, fans need to be prepared for his eventual departure. Pappa is not likely to spend the rest of his career in the MLS and will leave in the future.
