Yahoo! Contributor NetworkBeckham wins second AT&T Goal of the Week: A fan’s reaction
After suffering with back spasms for several weeks and being sidelined for games, David Beckham came up big against the Chicago Fire. His corner kick curved into the goal and won the game for the Los Angeles Galaxy. In addition, the goal was so impressive it won Becks the honor of the AT&T Goal of the Week for the second time in 2011.
The Los Angeles Galaxy are used to benefiting from the Englishman's set pieces. After all, in 2011, Beckham has assisted eight goals so far for the Galaxy. In addition to having the second most assists in the league, he also has tallied two goals for his team. Interestingly enough, both of those goals were nominated for goal of the week and both won the honor.
Beckham's first goal of the season was against Sporting Kansas City on May 14. This time the midfielder was given a free kick. As the ball sailed through the air, both the fans and David knew the ball was in. The goal was nominated for goal of the week for Week 9. This time around, Beckham's goal won 77 percent of the vote.
His second and most current award happened midway through the second half. The Galaxy and Fire were tied 1-1 and Beckham stepped up for the corner. Beckham's low bending corner skipped past several players and then into the goal. The impressive corner put the Galaxy up 2-1 and the Chicago Fire were not able to recover. Beckham also set up the assist for Landon Donovan's goal in the 58th minute. He did all of this while still suffering from his prior back injury.
With 37 percent of the vote, David Beckham edged out Fredy Montero's nominated goal.Seattle's Montero received 34 percent of the vote. See both of the goals here.
This Saturday, July 16, the Los Angeles Galaxy will face David Beckham's former club, Real Madrid. He played with los Merengues from 2003 to 2007 before moving to Los Angeles to play with the Galaxy. This will be the third time the Galaxy play Real Madrid, which won the last two contests. Beckham will be up against some of his former teammates and is excited about the game.
Let's hope David Beckham and the rest of the crew can put some goals in the back of the net against Real Madrid.
