Yahoo! Contributor NetworkGalaxy Reserves Fall to Chivas USA, 4-2: Fan’s Reaction
The Los Angeles Galaxy lost to Chivas USA, 4-2, in their first MLS Reserve League match on April 2.
Neither team found the back of the net in the first half. Chivas USA jumped out to a 3-0 lead in just six minutes before the hour mark. Miller BolaƱos scored first for the Goats before Cesar Romero scored two goals. Chad Barrett scored two goals for our side to cut the deficit to one by the 83rd minute. Adam Cristman assisted on both of Barrett's goals. Romero got the hat trick to put the match out of reach in the 86th minute.
The play of the reserves isn't a real reflection on the team as a whole. Last season, the Galaxy finished dead last in the MLS Reserve League and only won one match. The first team won the Supporters' Shield and the MLS Cup last year. It's important to remember that if all the reserve players get is playing experience from the Reserve League, that could come in handy if the first team needs them.
While the first team certainly needs help on the back line, especially in the central defense, none looks to be coming from the reserves. I guess we shouldn't have expected any different. If L.A. had any answers for the defensive struggles on the bench, we likely would have seen them already. In the meantime until Leonardo returns from injury, Galaxy fans just have to hope the defenders we have can figure out how to fix the mistakes they've been making.
Barrett admitted that the team is missing Omar Gonzalez and is anticipating Leonardo's return. He said about the defensive issues, "But right now we're just looking for someone to firmly put their foot down and say, 'Hey, you know what? This center-back position is mine.' And until someone does that, we might just keep conceding goals." The ownership issue about the conceded goals extends to the whole team, according to Barrett. Barrett also hinted that communication issues and a "lack of a sense of pride" have hindered the team so far.
