David Beckham Rejects PSG Offer: Fan Reaction
David Beckham has rejected an offer to transfer to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). Reports on Jan. 3 from the French team have finally squelched the incessant stream of information about his potential move. However, a new rumor has surfaced about Beckham's wish to own an MLS team.
Not Moving to France
For several months, reports about David Beckham's potential transfer to Paris Saint-Germain from the Los Angeles Galaxy have been circulating among the media and fan forums. There were rumors that Victoria Beckham, his wife, was searching for apartments in France. Additionally, PSG allegedly purchased 20,000 shirts with his face and name.
However, the transfer rumors began to weaken at the end of Dec. 2011. PSG director Leonardo no longer seemed certain that Beckham would be coming to France. Finally, on Jan. 3, the PSG president made it clear that the transfer was not going to occur and added that the team was "disappointed." I am not surprised by his decision because the emphasis he places on his family always meant he would not want to uproot them. The Beckhams have built a life in Los Angeles that they do not want to exchange.
Beckham's contract with the L.A. Galaxy expired in 2011, but there is speculation that he may be negotiating a new version with the team. Although there have not been any official announcements about reaching a new deal, I think his rejection of Paris Saint-Germain is a good indication that he will stay with MLS.
Does Beckham Want to Own an MLS Team?
David Beckham has been generally reticent about his plans for retirement. He may spend several more years playing soccer, but at the age of 36 his career is rapidly reaching its end. Beckham has occasionally discussed his future plans but has not made any recent announcements.
The death of the PSG rumor has actually resurrected a new piece of gossip. Beckham's rejection of Paris Saint-Germain has revived a previous interview that mentioned his desire to become an owner of an MLS team. In 2009, he stated, "I have the right to own an MLS franchise, which I will action immediately after I have stopped playing." It seems that staying with MLS is part of his plan to attain team ownership.
