Badilla close to New England move

TIBAS, Costa Rica (Ticker) - Saprissa and Costa Rica defender Gabriel Badilla could be on the verge of joining the New England Revolution.

Saprissa vice-president Mariano Varela has claimed the club is in talks with the Revolution over the 23-year-old, but wants more than the New Englanders have so far offered.

“They offered an amount of money. We’ve planned another. Now we hope we can come to a deal that suits both clubs,” Varela told Costa Rican newspaper Extra.

“The amount of money we want is higher than New England’s offer, but it should not be an obstacle to a deal.”

Badilla, who represented his country at the 2006 World Cup, would relish the chance to play abroad after more than five seasons in the Costa Rican league.

“For any player, the opportunity to play abroad is always good. We’ll be patient,” he said.
