Report: Veron signs with DC United

NEW YORK (TICKER) —Major League Soccer has apparently landed another of world soccer’s biggest names, Argentinian midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron.

Veron has agreed to a deal to play for DC United, according to a report on SI.com early Friday.

While no player on the planet can compare to the impact of signing David Beckham, securing Veron’s signature would represent the biggest coup for MLS since the arrival of the former England captain in 2007.

The 32-year-old Veron was an Italian champion and UEFA Cup winner with Lazio during the best spell of his career, when he was widely regarded as one of the best midfielders in the world.

That persuaded Manchester to pay a record-breaking $57 million to sign the Argentina international in 2001, but he never settled in the English game, either at United or during a subsequent spell with Chelsea.

He eventually departed to return to Italy where he was a two-time Coppa Italia winner with Inter Milan.

More recently, Veron has been playing with Estudiantes in Argentina but his contract is due to expire shortly.

He was frequently linked with United throughout 2007, with United officials making numerous trips to Argentina and his agent being seen in Washington prior to the MLS Cup.

According to the report on SI.com, Veron will be introduced at a press conference in Washington on Wednesday.
