Red Bulls F Angel named MLS Player of the Week

NEW YORK (TICKER) —It did not long for Juan Pablo Angel to make his mark in his new league.

The New York Red Bulls forward on Monday was named Major League Soccer’s Player of the Week.

The 31-year-old Angel played a key role in the Red Bulls’ 4-0 victory over the Columbus Crew on Saturday, scoring his first goal and collecting a pair of assists in just his second game.

Coming over to the MLS after starring with Aston Villa of the English Premiership, Angel set up John Wolyniec on a give-and-go in the 17th minute to open the scoring.

After getting another assist in the 51st minute, Angel gave New York a 3-0 lead 10 minutes later when he stole a pass from the Columbus defense, raced in one-on-one with Crew goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum and slotted a shot in the right corner.

One of two designated players in the MLS prior to David Beckham joining the Los Angeles Galaxy, Angel collected 62 goals in 205 games with Aston Villa.
