Beckham confident he’ll play against Fire

CARSON, Calif. (AP)—Galaxy star David Beckham is confident that an inflamed right Achilles tendon will not keep him from playing Friday night in a game against the Chicago Fire with postseason implications.

“I’ll be ready,” Beckham said after Thursday’s practice. “I don’t see why not. I’ve trained every day this week and I’ve worked on fitness this week so it’s been good.

“Obviously it’s hard to practice and train on that, but I don’t see it being a problem for tomorrow.”

Los Angeles is on the verge of qualifying for the Major League Soccer playoffs for the first time since 2005, when it won the MLS Cup. It would also be the team’s first time in the postseason since Beckham arrived in 2007.

“I think it would mean a lot to all of us,” Beckham said. “It’s been disappointing the last few years not even reaching the playoffs. We’ve made small steps forward this year and worked hard as a team. Hopefully, the hard work will play off.”

Galaxy coach Bruce Arena was taking a more cautious approach.

“We hope he’s going to be able to play,” Arena said. “We’ll see how he reacts to training. Today we just had a light day. He’s certainly improved from where he was last week.”

The winner Friday will enhance its chances of reaching the MLS playoffs, and would qualify outright if D.C. United loses to or ties Chivas USA on Saturday night. Los Angeles and Chicago have 41 points apiece.

Fire midfielder Cuauhtemoc Blanco did not travel with the team because of a strained left hamstring.

The MLS will not improve until the national team starts returning some results to get excited about. The U/S team will need to win a World Cup and finish in the final 4 in consecutive tournaments to make a blip with American fans. Eight years of top tier performance may generate some lasting interest. Even a fluke year that sees thru to the final in one tournament would help. Bus signing all the best stars in the world to play here won't do anything unless they respect the sport. And as long as U.S. is ranked 30th in the world or what have you...people will not respect it. Look at cycling....who cares until Lance Armstrong comes along. Now Americans watch the tour de France and don't even realize their are other cycling races out there.

The people disparaging his playing ability do not understand the beautiful game. Beckham brings a unique dynamic to the game with long pinpoint passes that help to open up a defense. He is also very smart with his short passes as well quickly moving the ball out of danger like many Euro players can do but few in MLS have mastered. If you want to rag on him, rag on him for his defense which has always been suspect. But please don't make yourself look like an idiot and say he doesn't score enough. As far as the paycheck goes, they probably made twice their money back in free advertising, shirt sales, and exposure.

Take a look at Beckham's rate of production for the last three years noting that he is a paid about 60 times more than the average MLS player. Season 2007 - No goals, no assists, La Galaxy finishes smack last. Capt. Beckham injured(in a 50/50 tackle with a 4 1/2 ft. Mexican)- $6 Million. Season 2008- 3 goals, 7 assists. Galaxy finishes smack last. - $6 million. Season 2009 - 3 goals, 4 assists and counting. Missed half the season and LA built a winning team without him. Half season- $ 3 million. Total production : 6 goals, 11 assists in 2 1/2 seasons = $15, 000,000,00. I think this Beckham guy is a steal at that rate of production. Check it out.

Anyone saying that Becks has no implications has not been watching MLS this year. He has done amazing for my Galaxy, FINALLY! I would agree he was bad before but this year he is a new player and helps us win so many matches. Too bad he was such a douche about Milan

I really don't care where Beckham plays. I am just that laid back. I mean it seems like Freddie Ljungberg and Cuauhtemoc Blanco have more stature than Beckham. But seriously, I think he should return to Manchester United if he wanted to move back to Europe. Or maybe go to AC Milan... again. But all I am saying is I don't care where he winds up. But if he leaves MLS after this season, at least end it with a playoff appearance for the first time in like 97 years (I was being sarcastic there. You should get what I mean). And at least make it to the semis. If anything at least win the god forsaken MLS Cup.

Beck's still gets it done. So be quite all you haters !!!!!!! He is still a great player even at 34. Love to see you haters perform at that age. And don't say that you could because the truth is you never did and never could. FACT !!!!!!

Beckham is in a negative situation at the moment. However, I believe that a person of his stature deserves a chance. Beckham's heart doesn't seem to be in it although he's playing. He's a fish out of water! I hope he can let his soccer action do the talking than his mouth recently. If things don't improve, I do hope that he can get to play soccer wherever he wants which is not in LA. A world with Beckham, is better than a world without him though.

Bottom line is Beckham does not want to be in MLS. He is in pretty good form right now and will help the Galaxy reach the playoffs, but MLS needs to let him go at the end of the season.
The longer he stays in MLS the more of a negative distraction he's going to become. He's complained about MLS travel and accommodations for clubs, which is ridiculous. It's not like teams are riding the broken-down bus from the film "Major League" and staying in Motel 6 when they're on the road.
Oh, and the $1,000 fine? Yeah, that's a joke. Beckham drops that on lunch.

I watched the Galaxy games yesterday with Kansas,. Beckham played hard, very smart and skillful, the rest of players of Galaxy & Kansas team did not have adequate talent, including Donavan.... That is the reason why Beckham wants to play in Europe. Everyone complained about Beckham should watch Premier League and compare to MLS games...

I am not an American fan, but I think Beckham don't care about the Galaxy. He is very stupid to lie to the to the fans and now he's trying to get away with it. First, he fooled the LA organization and the fans. Now, he's getting angry because the fans are desappointed by his lack of motivation for Galaxy. I think Beckham neds to go play socer where he's happy !! As long as he's ont he team, they never gonna make the playoffs. He needs to come forward clean and let everybody knows how pathetic he is. He's a fraud, and it's very unfair to the US soccer. I am sorry US fans.

They arent passionate fans, theyre a group of american sports morons. the same morons who boo their team when it does poorly and only cheer when it does well. just because you buy a ticket doesnt give you the right to hurl insults at a player or players. josh paige is a jackass. the riot squad? what a joke. go to manchester, anfield or the emirates and try the stupid @#$% they do over here. theyd send your dumb ass home in a box covered in boot prints. @#$% riot squad? what a joke. america needs soccer supporters, not morons like those. they should be on their knees kissing his ass that they even get to see one quality player in their league. give mls a year or two. i heard theyre going to sign thierry henry when he's finally past his prime.

    brezac2000,

You're right. Should the Galaxy win more games, the Riot Squad will riot for Beckham. But that's the nature of passionate fans. If only they would use that enthusiasm to attract more fans, not act like fools.

    Fabrizio O,
I agree w/ you that soccer will improve when home-grown players step up and take the game to the next level. I support our local developmental league, USL div. 2 games, and even the crappy Redbulls. Ofcourse, I'm down w/ the American Outlaws, and I will attend and support the game in New Rutherford tommorow. I'd rather support an American soccer player, than a snobby british one.

I truly have to confess my confusion as to who really should be blamed here? What I am referring to are those who find Beckam's behaviour inappropriate ... which he really is a true product of PR and marketing ... or the fans who keep paying the ticket sales to watch such money mongrel @#$%s? I mean come on people! Landon Donovan has been a true athlete for the LA Galaxy ... as well as his field mates ... but without the fans protesting the inexcusable salary that DB received is pathetic! As long as you keep paying to see the game, the more you will see both of DB and those who will follow in his footsteps. Give the money to true athletes who dedicate themselves to the team 100% Besides, some of this is not even DB fault ... meaning who the F*** gave permission for him to be loaned to AC Milan for 5 months when he just signed a contract with LA?!?!?!?! If anything the fans should be boycotting the Galaxy admin for making such a move while they still take in revenue from your ticket purchases! WAKE UP LA FANS!!!

There is a lot of chat regarding the incident in LA regarding Mr. Beckham. From what I viewed on replay, yes the fans hung banners saying "repent" etc. (which they have the right to do) yes Mr. Beckham came over to the fans and pointed for them to come down as in challenge them and when one of them did Mr. Becham tried to get over the advertisment to get at this fan.
The fan is banned and Beckham gets a $1,000 fine? MLS have some balls! Beckham has totally taken advantage of your naivety, tries to act like he actually cares about MLS, which he clearly does not... its me first always David. Get him out of here, what a huge mistake you MLS and the LA Galaxy have done handling this mess!
    Peace
