TORONTO - Alex Anthopoulos unveiled his long awaited blueprint for the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday and a by-product of his ambitious philosophy is likely more waiting for fans desperate to see a winner.

To no surprise, Cito Gaston, 65, will be back as the Blue Jays' manager for the 2010 season.

Although there had been a mini-mutiny against Gaston—some players at the end of the season expressed their displeasure with his negative comments to the press and "old school" managing style—Gaston was ratified as the manager for 2010 by general manager Alex Anthopoulos.

However, next season will be Gaston's final one at the helm. Following 2010, he has a four-year deal to be a consultant.

"He had even talked about it a little bit last year, that 2010 might be his last year with us," Anthopoulos said. "He didn't know that he wanted to continue (through the 2011 season)."

Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Vernon Wells will have surgery next week to repair damaged cartilage in his left wrist. The team announced Tuesday that Wells is expected to be ready in time for spring training. Wells, who is entering the third season of a seven-year, $126-million contract extension, hit .260 with 15 home runs and 66 RBIs in 158 games last season.

The Toronto Blue Jays are taking the interim tag off Paul Beeston's title. He was appointed president and CEO of the club and Rogers Centre for a three-year term Tuesday. Beeston took over from Paul Godfrey on an interim basis in October 2008. He said he didn't want the job full-time, noting it demanded someone willing to make a 5-to-10 year commitment.
