Matt Cain seldom gets much run support. Since the start of the 2007 season, the Giants have managed one run or fewer in 17 of his 41 starts.

So on Tuesday night, he helped himself out with a solo homer in the fifth inning, the fourth home run of his career—and Cain also wound up with his second victory of the season, against one of baseball's hottest teams. The Astros entered the game 10-1 in May.

Cain's teammates did some good offensive work in getting him a 3-0 lead in the first inning. That was all Cain needed: He's 21-6 lifetime when the Giants score three runs or more.

Even though Cain allowed a Carlos Lee homer in the eighth, some of his most impressive work came in that inning, particularly when he struck out Lance Berkman, the Astros' top hitter, and...
