The end of the World Series brought into sharp focus for the Mariners just how much free agency will affect the team this offseason.

Eight Mariners officially became free agents at the series' end. The list includes Miguel Batista, Erik Bedard, Russell Branyan, Jack Wilson, Adrian Beltre, Ken Griffey Jr., Mike Sweeney and Endy Chavez.

The Mariners have an option for the 2010 season on Wilson at $8.4 million with a $600,000 buyout going to Wilson if the Mariners don't pick up the option. The other seven all are unrestricted free agents. The Mariners haven't decided whether they will pick up Wilson's option, although the shortstop has said he'd like to return.

It appears that Beltre and Branyan will be heavily pursued by the Mariners, who are badly in need of...

The Seattle Mariners have claimed right-handed pitcher Yusmeiro Petit (USE-mere-o pa-TEET) off waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks. General manager Jack Zduriencik (zur-EN-cik) announced Thursday the addition of the 24-year-old who pitched in 23 games for Arizona last season. He was 3-10 with a 5.82 ERA.

The Seattle Mariners say Ken Griffey Jr. has undergone arthroscopic surgery on his left knee to remove a bone spur. The team says Griffey had the surgery on Monday in Cincinnati and was performed by Dr. Timothy Kremchek. Normal recovery time is four to six weeks. It's the second time in a year that Griffey has undergone surgery on his left knee.

He's scheduled to have surgery Friday on his left hip at Vail, Colo., and have the same procedure three weeks later on his right hip. Following three or four weeks of rehab he'll have surgery in Seattle on his left wrist.
