The Padres have been keeping first-round draft pick Donavan Tate as inactive as possible this fall as he rehabs from sports hernia surgery.

Officially, Tate spent a month at the Padres spring training/rehab facility in Peoria, Ariz., on a rehab assignment. But Tate sees it differently.

"I'm on a do-nothing-assignment," Tate joked recently. "I think I'm here so that they know I'm resting and not doing anything.

"And they're probably right. Had I stayed home after the surgery, I don't know, I might have done something. I'm pretty active. I think the Padres knew that. I don't think I've ever done nothing for so long."

A center fielder who was the third overall pick in last June's amateur draft, Tate suffered the injury days after signing with the Padres on Aug.
