Are Adrian Gonzalez's days with the Padres numbered?

The All-Star first baseman, who hit 40 homers with 99 RBIs this season, became the subject of trade rumors during Jed Hoyer's first week as the Padres' general manager.

Hoyer certainly knows the value of Gonzalez.

Before the trade deadline last July, Hoyer was helping put together a package to acquire Gonzalez while serving as an assistant general manager of the Boston Red Sox. Nothing came of that overture.

But Hoyer is now calling the shots for the Padres and is well aware of both the outside interest in Gonzalez and the market value of the 27-year-old who has 130 homers and 400 RBIs with a .287 average plus a Gold Glove in four seasons with the Padres.

Gonzalez is scheduled to make $4.75...

The San Diego Padres have outrighted utilityman Edgar Gonzalez to Triple-A Portland, moving him off the 40-man roster. He is the older brother of first baseman Adrian Gonzalez. Edgar Gonzalez was on the disabled list from mid-July to early September after getting hit in the head with a pitch.

Jeff Moorad is so enamored with the way the Boston Red Sox do business that he hired another one of Theo Epstein's assistants, this time to run the San Diego Padres. Jed Hoyer was formally introduced as the Padres' general manager on Monday. He was hired during the weekend after spending eight seasons with the Red Sox.

Jed Hoyer was once co-general manager of the Boston Red Sox for 44 days after Theo Epstein walked away from the job. Now Hoyer has a GM gig of his own. The San Diego Padres have hired Hoyer as their new general manager, a person with knowledge of the situation said Saturday.
