Pittsburgh Pirates catcher Ryan Doumit suffered a broken left thumb in the first inning of Tuesday's game against the St. Louis Cardinals and will be sidelined indefinitely.

Right-handed reliever Marino Salas finally got his first crack at the major leagues Tuesday night after spending 11 seasons in the minors. By the time his first day in the big leagues was over, he had a 1-0 career record.

The Pirates purchased the 26-year-old's contract from Class AAA Indianapolis before opening a three-game series in St. Louis. Salas pitched a scoreless ninth inning in his major league debut, despite walking the bases loaded, then got the win when the Pirates rallied for four runs in the top of the 10th to post an 8-4 win over the Cardinals.

Salas became the first Pirates pitcher to win in his major league debut since Paul Maholm on Aug. 30, 2005, at Milwaukee.

Paulino singled in the go-ahead run in a four-run 10th inning for his second crucial hit in an 8-4 victory over the Cardinals on Tuesday night. Pittsburgh Pirates catcher Ryan Doumit left Tuesday night's game after one inning, not long after injuring his left thumb while muffing a high strike for a passed ball. Ronny Paulino pinch-hit for Doumit, who had been in the cleanup slot against the Cardinals, and flied out to start the second. Doumit is batting .350 with five homers and 15 RBIs.
