At 12:01 a.m. on Nov. 20, baseball's shopping season began.

The Phillies, however, are in no rush to buy.

On the eve of the start of the free agent signing period, general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. described his approach to free agency as "aggressively patient," a contradiction in terms but also a reflection of the club's uncertainty over how the marketplace will develop.

Last year, it was slow to take shape, with few teams (besides the Yankees) plunging head-first into the free agent pool.
