Trevor Cahill's first season in the majors is one of streaks.

Lose two. Win two. Lose three. Win three.

Now he has lost two in a row, falling to 5-7.

The last two were his worst back-to-back starts of the year. Both times, he was pulled with two outs in the fourth inning. He lost both games and gave up 12 earned runs in the process.

Friday, he gave up eight runs (five earned) in a 15-3 loss at Cleveland.

Is it time for Cahill to take a break? The A's moved fellow 21-year-old rookie Brett Anderson back a few days before his last start, and it paid off. So they're bumping Anderson again - he'll pitch Monday in Boston instead of Sunday in Cleveland.

For now, the A's don't plan to push back Cahill.

Oakland Athletics left-hander Josh Outman has undergone ligament replacement surgery on his pitching elbow, ending his season. Dr. James Andrews performed the procedure, often called Tommy John surgery. Outman went 4-1 with a 3.48 ERA this season in 14 appearances, including 12 starts. Outman also had a bone spur removed.

The Athletics didn't immediately announce the severity of the surgery or a timetable for Outman's return. Outman visited with Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala., on Monday. Outman was transferred to the 60-day disabled list a day earlier, signaling the club expects a lengthy recovery period.
