Baseball history might be different if Ron Gardenhire had managed Cal Ripken.

The Twins manager made it clear Tuesday that he believes the easiest way to suffer a major injury is to play with a minor one. So Scott Baker won't be pitching for a while, and Delmon Young had to prove his sprained left ankle had healed before he was penciled into Minnesota's lineup.

"I told (Young), 'I don't need Superman out here. I need healthy players,'" Gardenhire said of his left fielder, who has played in 203 consecutive games. "I don't need something lingering a long time because you want to set some kind of record. I told him, 'You are not Cal Ripken.'"

Young taped his ankle and felt no effects from the misstep he took while running the bases one night earlier.
