At some point, around the the third inning with Texas trailing the Brewers 3-0, the Rangers realized that they are a good team who should be able to beat a 4th place team from the National League at least once with important playoff positioning on the line. Perhaps it was deft bullpen management from the skipper tonight that proved the difference with A.J. Griffin laboring through his 4+ innings. The maligned bullpen tossed 4 2/3 innings of scoreless ball with Alex Claudio cleaning up for Griffin and then Tony Barnette, Keone Kela, and Matt Bush each tossing a scoreless inning before Sam Dyson came in for his usual nailbiter of a save. For Barnette, it was his first action in nearly a month.
Good morning. Levi Weaver recaps the Rangers losing to the Brewers by a lot of runs for some reason despite six hits combined from Elvis Andrus and former Brewer Carlos Gomez. Despite the loss, Ryan Posner notes that Elvis continues to do his part with his 3-for-4 night last night. Stefan Stevenson reacts to the loss but notes that former Brewer Jeremy Jeffress' scoreless outing in his return to the mound are positives from last night. Posner writes about Jeffress getting in his first game since August 23 and how Tony Barnette could pitch this week for the first time since Sept. 4 as the bullpen gets healthy in time for the postseason. ARLINGTON, Texas — The Milwaukee Brewers hoped they were getting a stolen base threat when they acquired infielder Jonathan Villar from the Houston Astros last November. It turns out they got a budding power hitter, too. Villar, the major leagues’ stolen base leader, hit his 17th and 18th home runs and had a career-high five RBIs and Matt Garza beat his former team as the Brewers defeated the Texas Rangers 8-3 on Monday night. “I don’t think about that,” Villar said of hitting homers. “I need a base hit because I need more stolen bases.” Villar has 59 steals, one more than the Cincinnati Reds’ Billy Hamilton. He would become the franchise’s third stolen base champion, joining Scott Podsednik
