On paper anyway, the Dodgers' signing of Reed Johnson to be the team's fourth outfielder was the ideal find.

The former Blue Jay and Cub is not only a Southern California native, but his versatility also allows him to play all three outfield spots. Being able to move around fits in perfectly with the Dodgers' plans for 2010.

Last season, when Andre Ethier needed a day off, Matt Kemp had to move over from center field to right field. Reed's presence will allow Kemp to stay put in the upcoming season.

The Dodgers also are looking to get Manny Ramirez more days off to help his stamina late in the season. Ramirez looked visibly slower at the end of the 2009 season and complained that his legs were tired.

Veteran outfielder Brian Giles has signed a minor league contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers said Sunday that Giles has been invited to big league camp. A career .291 hitter, Giles batted just .191 in 61 games last season with the San Diego Padres. The 39-year-old Giles did not play after going on the disabled list June 19 with a bruised right knee.

Right-hander Ramon Ortiz and utilityman Alfredo Amezaga have agreed to minor league contracts with the Los Angeles Dodgers, hoping to return to the big leagues. Ortiz, who turns 37 on March 23, hasn't pitched in the majors since 2007 with Minnesota and Colorado. He was 5-6 with a 3.05 ERA last year in 16 starts and 19 relief appearances for San Francisco's Triple-A Fresno farm team.

Jeff Weaver has agreed to return to the Los Angeles Dodgers for a minor league deal that includes an invitation to spring training. Weaver went 6-4 with a 3.65 ERA in 28 games for the Dodgers last year. The 33-year-old right-hander is 99-118 with a 4.67 ERA in 312 career games over 10 seasons. Weaver was born in Northridge and played college ball at Fresno State.

Outfielder Reed Johnson has agreed to an $800,000, one-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Johnson spent the last two seasons with the Chicago Cubs after beginning his major league career with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2003. He hit .255 with four homers and 22 RBIs in 65 games for the Cubs last season.
