Putz, Pavano file for free agency (AP)

Mets reliever J.J. Putz and Twins pitcher Carl Pavano filed for free agency Saturday. Putz became a free agent one day after New York declined his $9.1 million option and chose to pay a $1 million buyout. A total of 120 players have filed for free agency since the World Series, and about 60 more are potentially eligible to file by the Nov.

Manny Ramirez is coming back to the Dodgers next season. The team said Friday that the slugger exercised his $20 million contract option for 2010. His agent Scott Boras informed general manager Ned Colletti of the decision, which Ramirez had until this month to make. He could have exercised an out clause in the two-year, $45 million deal he signed in March.

Now that the time has arrived for the Dodgers to figure out how to make it to the World Series after close calls in each of the last two seasons, something entirely different has moved front and center with the club.

The divorce of owners Frank and Jamie McCourt has grabbed all of the headlines, even with Manny Ramirez's decision on a player option at $20 million fast approaching.

A Superior Court judge denied Jamie McCourt's request to be reinstated to her job as Dodgers chief executive. Frank McCourt fired her from that position last month, one day after the Dodgers were eliminated from the National League Championship Series.

Jamie McCourt insists she is partial owner of the team, and says she should be recognized as such in divorce.

The Dodgers have declined a $10 million mutual option on pitcher Jon Garland for next season, making him eligible for free agency. The right-hander gets a $2.5 million buyout because the team declined; he would have earned a $1 million buyout if he had declined. Garland was acquired from Arizona ahead of the July 31 trade deadline for infielder Tony Abreu.
