Brandon Wood has spent the past three years on a shuttle between Anaheim and Salt Lake City, home of the Angels' Class AAA affiliate.

But the Angels' perennial prospect is out of minor league options and might be in line for a clear shot at a major league job next spring.

Wood, 24, would be the obvious replacement at third base if Chone Figgins leaves as a free agent.

"We've internally talked about this for a long time," manager Mike Scioscia said of Wood. "He's absolutely ready for the opportunity—much like Kendry Morales was. Now I'm not saying he's going to put up Kendry's numbers. But as far as where he is and what he's going to accomplish, playing at a level outside the major leagues is not going to move his career forward.
