He was the youngest Opening Day starter in 3 decades

From the archives, March 31, 2014: Across the state in St. Petersburg, 39-year-old knuckleball pitcher R. A. Dickey will toe the rubber for Toronto. Detroit Tigers left-handed reliever Kyle Ryan has been dealing with a rib/back issue on his left side.  That’s why he hasn’t pitched since Sept. 15. “Got a little fatigue in my back right now,” Ryan said. “Right around the (scapula) area. They said it was supposedly a rib that popped out. We tried popping it back in. They said it was back in a couple times, but I guess it kept popping back out. “When I get extension, it hurts." Asked whether he has dealt with this before, Ryan said: “No, not to this extent.” Ryan said he has no idea how the injury occurred. “A lot of people never find out that that’s what they’ve got going on,” athletic trainer Kevin Rand said. “It pulls the rib a little bit.
