Weeks after interviewing unsuccessfully for the Astros' managerial opening, Al Pedrique, a veteran of the organization, was hired back as bench coach.

New manager Brad Mills added Pedrique, providing the Astros with major league managerial experience in Mills' ear. Pedrique, 49, was the interim manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2004.

"I have multiple people who know him that I've talked about, and it's all extremely positive," Mills said.

Since his Arizona stint, Pedrique has served a number of roles in the Astros organization. He was named a special assistant to then-general manager Tim Purpura in November 2004 and was later the director of Latin American operations.

He spent most of 2009 as minor league coordinator, and he joined the major league...

The Houston Astros added several coaches to new manager Brad Mills' staff Friday, hiring Brad Arnsberg as their pitching coach, promoting Al Pedrique to bench coach and adding Bobby Meacham as their first-base coach. The team also declined the 2010 option on right-handed relief pitcher Doug Brocail and re-signed third baseman Geoff Blum to a one-year, $1.5 million contract.
