Indians add 7 to 40-man roster (AP)

The Cleveland Indians have added pitchers Kelvin De La Cruz of Class-A Mahoning Valley and Jeanmar Gomez of Double-A Akron and five other minor leaguers to their 40-man roster. The other additions announced Friday were infielder-outfielder Jordan Brown and infielders Jason Donald and Wes Hodges of Triple-A Columbus, and infielder Carlos Rivero and outfielder Nick Weglarz of Akron.

New manager Manny Acta said he expects to complete his coaching staff with the hiring of a hitting coach sometime just before the start of the winter meetings. All of the other coaches on Acta's coaching staff are now in place.

The first coach hired was former major league pitcher Tim Belcher, who will be Acta's pitching coach. Tim Tolman, who was with Acta in Washington, will be the Indians' bench coach.

The third base coach will be veteran major league coach Steve Smith. The first base coach and catching instructor will be former Indians catcher Sandy Alomar Jr., and former major league pitcher Scott Radinsky will be the bullpen coach.

With the hitting coach still to be hired, Acta's staff includes two coaches who were already in the organization.

Venezuelan outfielder Alex Ramirez was named MVP of Japan's Central League for the second straight year on Wednesday while pitcher Yu Darvish took the Pacific League honors. The 35-year-old Ramirez hit .322 in helping the Yomiuri Giants to their first Japan Series championship since 2002. He had 31 homers and drove in 103 runs in 144 games this season, his ninth in Japan.

Sandy Alomar Jr.'s baseball career has brought him back home. The Indians' popular former All-Star catcher has been hired by new Cleveland manager Manny Acta as the team's first-base coach. Alomar had spent the past two seasons as a catching instructor for the New York Mets. He will also mentor Cleveland's catchers.
