Indians hires Belcher as pitching coach (AP)

During his search for Cleveland's pitching coach, new Indians manager Manny Acta was meeting with general manager Mark Shapiro when Tim Belcher's name came up for discussion. After a few minutes, Acta had heard enough. "He said, 'Why are we going any farther? This is the guy,"' Shapiro said.

As the offseason begins, Indians officials are confronted with a rotation more unsettled and out of focus than at any time since the opening of Progressive Field in 1994. Indians officials have lots of names of potential starting pitchers, but also lots of question marks and almost no sure-things.

That makes the status of veteran right-hander Jake Westbrook more critical than ever. Westbrook is the only starting pitcher on the roster with an extended track record of success at the major league level.

Westbrook is also one of the Indians' most uncertain pitchers physically. The 32-year-old right-hander hasn't pitched in a major league game since May 28, 2008. He had Tommy John surgery on June 12, 2008, and his rehab has taken longer than expected.

Indians outfielder Matt LaPorta has undergone two surgeries, one on his left hip and the other to fix an injured toe. The Indians said LaPorta had the operations on Tuesday in Colorado.
